Xavia "Josie" Massey Murphy

April 14, 1940 — May 6, 2017

Xavia "Josie" Massey Murphy passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at the age of 77. She was surrounded by her family and knew she was loved. Josie is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 59 years John Meredith Murphy. Beloved mother of John M Murphy, Jr. (Leslie) and Susan Murphy Deslatte (Clem). Grandmother of Jennifer Deslatte Coco (Bradley), Jarod Joseph Murphy (Angela), Jacob Patrick Murphy and Robert Conlin Murphy. Great-grandmother of Ryan Patrick Coco and she was anxiously awaiting the arrival her second great grandson, Jackson Joseph, in June.
Beloved daughter of the late Santa Xavia Giardina Massey and Lloyd Massey in New Orleans, LA, where she was raised in a close knit Italian family. Granddaughter of the late Xavia Guiffritta Giardina and Salvador Giardina. Daughter-in-law of the late Zillah "Tootsie" Igleharte Murphy and Joseph Lemley Murphy.
Sister of Lloyd Massey (Sandra), and sister-in-law to Sharon Murphy Gauthreaux (the late Earl). Also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
After Josie retired from her job as the Office Manager for Dr.'s Merlin and Hayman, she enjoyed traveling, painting, jewelry design, but most of all she loved being surrounded by her family. Josie was a long time volunteer at WYES and was still an active alumnus of Behrman High School. She was a proud Holy Cross Grandparent. Josie was a member and past President of the Westbank Art Guild, and a former member and past President of the American Association of Medical Assistants in the New Orleans and Louisiana State Chapters. She will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by all who knew her.
Relatives and Friends are invited to attend the Funeral Service in the Chapel of MOTHE FUNERAL HOME, 2100 Westbank Expy, Harvey, LA on Thursday, May 11, 2017 at 1:30 PM. Visitation will be held Thursday morning from 10 AM until 1:30 PM. Interment will follow in Lafayette Cemetery #1, New Orleans, LA.
