Walter Thomas Niklaus, Jr. passed away peacefully on Monday, June 15, 2026, at the age of 88. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on August 25, 1937, to Alba and Walter Niklaus.
The father of Angela Ruiz, Christian Niklaus, and Alvin Niklaus; the grandfather of Jessica Stegall, Hopie Ruiz, Nicole Manno and Alyssa Ruiz; and great-grandfather of Adrianna, Aurora, Aaliyah, Angelina, Julianna, Christiana, Jace, Sophia, Ryder, and Arya; and great great-grandfather of 3. Walter was the sibling of the late Marlene Weber, the half-sibling of Diane Martin, Sandra Richardson, JoAnn Niklaus, Shirley Niklaus, Debra Niklaus, and the late Alvin Darcey. He is also survived by his nieces, nephews, cousins, and wonderful lifelong friends. A special acknowledgement is given to his nephew, Steven Richardson, for his devoted care, kindness, and steadfast support.
He was a native of New Orleans, and proud resident of Algiers for over 50 years. After high school in 1956, Walter went to boot camp and began his professional career as a United States Marine where he retired as Master Sergeant.
Walter was loving, compassionate, and most of all a very caring person to all. He enjoyed spending time at the shooting range and fishing. He was an avid and dedicated car enthusiast. However, his true passion was to the United States Marines. Walter was unique and irreplaceable, well respected and liked, and will be deeply and dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
His spirit and tender nature will remain in the many memories of his cherished friends and family until they meet him again.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral mass in the chapel at MOTHE Funeral Home, 2100 Westbank Expwy Harvey, Louisiana, on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at 1 p.m. with visitation from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Interment will follow in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, 1225 Whitney Avenue, Gretna, Louisiana.
