Captain Victor Manuel Gonzalez Sr.

Captain Victor Manuel Gonzalez, Sr., age 88, originally from La Ascunsion, Island of Margarita, Venezuela, and resident of New Orleans, Louisiana since 1965, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2017, in Metairie, Louisiana. Captain Gonzalez, born on May 8, 1928, to Francisco Antonio Gonzalez and Maria Salome Rodriguez de Gonzalez, one of 11 children.    He is the last of his beloved siblings to depart this Earth.  He became a Captain in the Venezuela Merchant Marine, which opportunity brought him to New Orleans, Louisiana in 1965.  He married Maria Elvira Figueroa and had five children, Marina Ascunsion (Peter Reed) of Gretna, Louisiana, Victor Manuel Jr., Enrique Jose (Henry) (Carol Wilson), of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Marcel Arevalo (Alyce Kahn) of Kenner, Louisiana, and Marvic Esther, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. His love of his expansive family, both in the United States and Venezuela, was evident his entire life.  He was an avid traveler until affected with vision loss, and loved good books, food, conversation, and the company of his family.  He was predeceased by his loving wife, Maria Elvira Figueroa de Gonzalez, on October 11, 2003, and by his first born son, Victor Manuel Gonzalez, Jr. on September 23, 2009. He is survived by four children, 11 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren.   He is also survived by two sisters in law, many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and extended relatives.   He leaves a void in many lives, and will be sadly missed.
The family will receive friends from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m., with a closing Memorial service at 11:00 a.m., at Mothe Funeral Home 1300 Vallette Street, New Orleans, Louisiana, on Monday, January 9, 2017.
