Vicki Sumrall Esquivel

Vicki Sumrall Esquivel, a resident of Gretna, Louisiana, passed away peacefully at the age of 64 on November 25, 2022, after a long battle with acute myeloid leukemia cancer. Adored and cherished wife of 39 years to John Joseph Esquivel. Mother of Joshua Esquivel, John “Tyler” Esquivel, and Dianna Nichols (David). Daughter of the late Robert Earl Sumrall and Norma Frazier Sumrall. Sister of Lori Sumrall, Barry Sumrall, and Brett Sumrall. Aunt to Kayla Rene Sumrall. Also survived by her sister-in-law, Erika Voiret (Donnie). Vicki attended Terrytown Elementary School, Livaudais Middle School, and John Ehret High School. As a senior in high school, she began working at the Jefferson Parish Juvenile Court. She continued working there for the next 14 years. During that time, she earned an Associate of Science in Counseling degree from the University of Holy Cross, as well as a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice. Later, she returned to the University of New Orleans and received a Certificate in Elementary Education and a Master of Education Degree in Educational Administration, earning a 4.0-grade point average. She began her educational career as a teacher at Miller Wall Elementary School. She was then a teacher at Woodmere Elementary School for 11 years. She became an assistant principal at both Ruppel Elementary School & Paul J. Solis Elementary School. She became the principal at McDonogh 26 Elementary School. She returned to Paul J. Solis Elementary School as the principal for the next 14 years. Vicki received many professional accolades. She was selected as “Teacher of the Year” by the faculty and staff of Woodmere Elementary School. She was a Safe & Drug-Free School Chair Team Leader. She was a Lead Frameworks Facilitation Training Instructor. She was one of the select few to achieve National Board Certification in Louisiana. Vicki will be greatly missed by her husband, family, and friends. Her memory will never fade.
