S.J. (Stafford James) Mayeaux, 82, of Belle Chasse, Louisiana passed away on Saturday January 17, 2026.
S.J. was born Thursday, September 16, 1943, in Marksville, Louisiana. S.J. graduated from Marksville High School in 1960, joined The Louisiana Army National Guard in 1965 and served until honorably discharged in 1970.
He is preceded in death by his grandson Evan Michael Johnson, parents Hersey Mayeux and Orpha Mayeux, brothers Hersey Mayeux, Jr. (Faye), Allen Mayeux (Gloria) sisters Ruby Nell Moreau, Gail Sayer and Annie Mae Stroud (Jerry)
S.J. married Elizabeth Gail Hackett on December 5, 1968, at St. Joseph's Church in Marksville, LA. This was the first step in their building a large Catholic, faith-based family.
Remaining to cherish S.J.'s memory are his wife of 57 years, Gail Mayeaux, children: Craig Mayeaux (Angel), Chad Mayeaux (Melanie), Chris Mayeaux, Caren Johnson (Bobby), Chuck Mayeaux, Grand Children: Nataly Gallagher (Kevin), Tyler Johnson (Madison Gondrella), Hailey Mayeaux, Emily Johnson (Connor Richoux), Hersey Mayeaux, Amelia Mayeaux: Brother, Julius Mayeaux. In-Laws: Cathy Hasset (Jim), Rod Hackett (Tara), Louis Hackett, Victoria Wedge (Danny) and many loving nephews and nieces.
S.J. worked as a carpenter, contractor, real estate investor and Plaquemines Parish building inspector. He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church and served as a fair chair in 1980 and 1981 and also as a CYO chaperone.
In his younger years S.J. enjoyed hunting and fishing and he passed this love down to his children and grandchildren. Later in life he especially loved trapping and relocating animals, gardening and spending time with his family.
S.J. was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a selfless and hardworking man of few words but infinite love, whose quiet presence was the foundation of his family. Whether he was calling his children to check in or letting them know what next project they were going to do, they never doubted his support and unconditional love for his family. S.J. loved making people laugh and laughing with them in any circumstance. His practical mind and problem-solving attitude fueled his eagerness to make repairs for others, sometimes before they knew it even needed fixing. He leaves behind a legacy of integrity, hard work and a love so deep it needed no fanfare.
Visitation will be held Friday, January 23, 2026, at 10:00am - Noon at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Belle Chasse, Louisiana. Funeral mass will begin at Noon. Interment following at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cemetery.
