Shirley Mae Kennedy Akers passed away on June 21, 2017. Beloved wife of the late Norman C. Akers. Daughter of the late Harold G. Kennedy and Yolande Hymel Kennedy. She is survived by four sons Daniel, Thomas, Jimmy, and Patrick Akers, three daughters-in-law Sylvia, Jane, and Janice Akers. Grandmother of five grandchildren Michael, Melissa, Brian, Jennifer, and Brendan Akers, and 12 great-grandchildren. Age 93 years and a lifelong resident of Algiers, LA. A teacher in Orleans Parish Public Schools for 36 years, Shirley held a B.S. from St. Mary’s Dominican College and an M.Ed. from Loyola University. Honors she received included: Founder’s Award, Kappa Delta Psi Honor Education Fraternity, Loyola Chapter; two nominations for Louisiana Science Teacher of the Year; three National Science Foundation Grants; election as Teacher of the Year, Edna Karr Junior High School; member and officer of Kappa Kappa Iota, National Teacher Society. She was also a volunteer docent at the The Cabildo and New Orleans Museum of Art. She also served as European travel advisor and lecturer for 26 years with the Foreign Study League through Nicholls State University. Relatives and Friends of the Family are invited to attend the Visitation at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church, 3101 Eton Street, Algiers, LA on Tuesday, June 27, 2017 from 9:30 AM until 11:45 AM. Words of Remembrance will be shared at 11:45 AM followed by the Funeral Mass at 12 PM. Interment Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Gretna, LA.
