Richard Francis Pitre, age 82, died peacefully on May 31st, 2026, at home surrounded by his loved ones.
He was preceded in death by Sandra Edwards Pitre, his wife of 52 years, his daughter Connie Pitre, and his parents Ernest B. Pitre and Mabel Roux Pitre.
He leaves behind his children, Beth Prince (Johnny), Ricky Pitre (Ramona) and Elena Baye (Jeremy), and his grandchildren Emree & Haven Panepinto and Jasmine & Jasper Pitre.
Richard was born and raised in Westwego, LA., and graduated from West Jefferson High School. He served in the US Air Force, where he was stationed in Seoul, South Korea until 1968. Richard’s sister, Dale, introduced him to her friend, Sandra, in December of ’68. After a successful blind date, they married in 1969. He retired from Avondale Shipyard after a 40 year career, primarily as a weld inspector.
Richard’s love for music was prevalent throughout his life. He began playing his guitar with local bands like “Eddie P & the Deacons” and with his other school buddies. They played in and around the Westwego area at sock-hops, parties and clubs. He continued playing music with his friends into his 60’s and early 70’s. Richard used his God given talent to serve in local churches by singing and playing music most of his adult life starting with 'Voices of Praise' along side Wynonia Lazaro and Eddie Parrino. People would often recognize him at the store or at a restaurant, and they knew who he was. They may not have known his name, but they remembered his face and knew his voice. Richard used to sing to his mother for her birthdays, and he sang for his grandchildren up until weeks before his passing. He was inducted into the Westbank Musicians’ Hall of Fame in 2004.
When he wasn’t playing music or singing, he would likely be found in his workshop or in his garden. In his retirement, his love of gardening became a full time hobby. His mission: trying to figure out a clever watering system for his plants, so he could supply his family and neighbors with tomatoes, peppers, eggplant and okra from his harvest.
Richard enjoyed telling jokes and watching cartoons with his grandkids and making them laugh. He always had a dad joke to share…even if you’ve already heard it.
He will certainly be missed. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Samaritan's Purse.
Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial mass at MOTHE Funeral Home, 7040 Lapalco Boulevard, Marrero, Louisiana. Details to follow.
