REV. MSGR. ALLEN J. ROY
“Well done My good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come and share your master’s joy.” Matthew 25:23 On August 28, 1929 God gave this world a precious gift with the birth of Reverend Monsignor Allen Roy and on September 5, 2025 God called him home at the age of 96. Msgr. Roy was the first of four sons born to Allen J. Roy, Sr. and Lucille Plauche Roy of Hamburg, LA in Avoyelles parish. As a young child his family moved to and settled in New Roads, LA. He attended St. Joseph Academy in New Roads where his faith was formed and his calling to be a Roman Catholic priest began. He attended St. Joseph Seminary College in St. Benedict, LA and Notre Dame seminary in New Orleans and was ordained to the priesthood on June 5, 1954 at St. Louis Cathedral. He served as Assistant Pastor at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in New Orleans, Our Lady of the Rosary Church in New Orleans and Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Violet, LA where he also served as pastor. During his assignment there he organized and provided relief for the victims of hurricane Betsy. Msgr. Roy was also assigned pastorates at St. Joseph Church in Chauvin, LA and was the founding pastor of Holy Spirit Church in New Orleans. In addition to his pastoral assignments, he served as chaplain of the 159th Evacuation Hospital, Assistant Director of Communications, Board of Regents, Archdiocesan Consultor, Dean of the Terrebonne Deanery and Algiers Plaquemines Deanery and was an Ecclesiastical Notary in the Matrimonial Tribunal. In May of 1970 he received a Master of Arts degree from Notre Dame Seminary College and in July of 1976 a Master of Religious Education degree from Notre Dame Seminary School of Theology. Msgr. Roy retired in 2011 and was a resident of Our Lady of Wisdom Health Care Center at the time of his death. He was a simple man and a true down to earth “people person” touching and changing many lives during his calling. Msgr. Roy leaves behind to cherish his memory his brothers, Kearn Roy and Pat Roy and his sisters in law, Adley Roy and Jeanie Roy all from New Roads as well as numerous nieces and nephews and the many acquaintances who blessed his life. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Jerry Roy; sister in law Jeanette Roy; nephew and godson, Gerard “Bug” Roy; and niece, Christy Roy. Visitation will be held on Friday, September 12, 2025 at Holy Spirit Church, 5201 Stratford Place, New Orleans from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. and on Saturday, September 13, 2025 from 9:00 to 11a.m. with funeral mass to be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. also at Holy Spirit Church in New Orleans. Pallbearers will be Brian Roy, Scott Roy, Gerry Roy, Pat Smith, Pat Bowes and Felix Garcia. Interment will be held at a later date in St. Mary’s of False River Cemetery in New Roads. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations are made to Holy Spirit Church, 5201 Stratford Place, New Orleans, LA 70131. Mothe Funeral Homes, LLC are in charge of the arrangements.
