Monica Lane Daigle, age 55, of Harvey, Louisiana, passed away leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and dedication that will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. A beloved mom, daughter, sister, aunt, godmother, teacher, coach, mentor, and friend, Monica devoted her life to enriching the lives of children and helping others reach their fullest potential.
Born and raised in Harvey, Louisiana, Monica was the cherished daughter of Linda Daigle and James Daigle. She is survived by her loving parents; her sister, Heather Bartholomew; her brother-in-law, Chad; her beloved godchildren, Coby and Cade Bartholomew; and six children whom she helped raise and loved as her own: Ray-Ray, Kolt, Rebecca, Chelsea, Raye-Ann, and Camryn D’ Aquin, who kindly refer to her as “MOMica”.
Monica's lifelong passion for children, education, and athletics began at Harvey Playground, where she grew up playing sports and forming lifelong friendships within a close-knit community she considered a second family. It was there that she developed her love for coaching and mentoring young athletes. Some of her fondest memories were spent encouraging and coaching her younger sister, Heather, whose successes brought Monica tremendous pride and joy.
A graduate of Archbishop Blenk High School, Monica attended the University of New Orleans, where she earned her Bachelor's Degree in Education and certification in Special Education. During those years, Monica demonstrated the selflessness that would define her life. After a devastating fire displaced her cousin's family, she immediately stepped in to help raise her six nieces and nephews while continuing her studies and pursuing her dream of becoming a teacher.
Monica spent 15 years as a kindergarten teacher at Mayfield Elementary School in Slidell, Louisiana. She possessed a rare gift for making every child feel loved, safe, and capable. Her classroom was a place where children flourished academically and emotionally, and parents regularly requested that their children be placed in her class because of the extraordinary care and dedication she provided. Her passion for teaching and commitment to her students earned her the distinguished honor of being named Teacher of the Year.
Beyond the classroom, Monica was a well-respected and accomplished coach who believed that sports were an opportunity to teach confidence, discipline, teamwork, and character. Alongside her sister, Heather, she helped lead local Gretna basketball teams to the Westbank and parish championships, creating memories that would last a lifetime for the young athletes she coached. Monica has also been coaching JPRD boys and girls Biddy basketball for 30 plus years, helping guide them to a State and National Championships while inspiring her players to believe in themselves both on and off the court.
Monica found joy in life's simple treasures. She loved traveling, especially trips to the beach, where she enjoyed relaxing with family and friends. She also loved fishing and never missed an opportunity to teach a child how to bait a hook, cast a line, and appreciate the outdoors. Whether planning a family vacation, coaching a game, teaching a lesson, or spending time with loved ones, Monica always placed the happiness and experiences of the children in her life above everything else.
Her greatest accomplishment was not found in awards, championships, or recognition, but in the countless lives she touched through her kindness, generosity, patience, and unconditional love. She was a constant source of encouragement, a trusted mentor, and a steadfast supporter of everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Monica's life at Celebration Church Westbank in Marrero, Louisiana on Wednesday, July 1st. Visitation will start at 3:30 p.m., followed by a service starting at 6:00. On Thursday, July 2nd, Monica will be laid to rest at Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Picayune, Mississippi, beside her beloved grandparents, Thomas and Jewel Mosley, and her Uncle Bubba. Services will start at 11:00 a.m.
Though our hearts are broken by her passing, we find comfort in knowing that Monica's legacy lives on through the students she inspired, the athletes she coached, the family she nurtured, and the countless memories she created. Her love, compassion, and unwavering devotion to others will never be forgotten.
Monica's life was a testament to what it means to serve others with an open heart. She will be deeply missed, forever loved, and always remembered.
