Michael “Mike” Sean McCleery passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, at the age of 49. Michael is survived by his loving wife of 22 years, Carol Fewell McCleery; his daughters Erin (Mack) and Brigid “Bitsy” McCleery; his mother Linda and stepfather Michael Dugar; his stepbrother Trevor Miller (Amy); many cousins, nieces, nephews, and very dear friends; and his best furry friend, Benji “The Big Guy.” He is preceded in death by his father Douglas Lane McCleery; his uncle Patrick Kelly Holmes; his grandparents Norma Kathleen Beckman and George James Holmes; his grandparents Ann and John McCleery; his aunt Barbara McCleery Alex; and his first furry friend Fern Josephine. A resident of New Orleans, LA, he was born in St. Louis Park, MN, and grew up in Minneapolis, MN. He was a proud graduate of Christ the King Catholic School, Academy of Holy Angels, Normandale Community College, and Loyola University New Orleans. In 1998, Mike moved to Louisiana to join the New Orleans Police Department. His 25 years of incredible service spanned across the 6th, 7th, and 8th Districts, Investigative Services Bureau (ISB), Public Integrity Bureau (PIB), and his favorite, Homicide. He was notably featured on two episodes of A&E’s show “The First 48” and received a Letter of Commendation from the Slidell Police Department for his investigative work on one of several homicide cases that were shown on the show. Mike was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Crescent City Lodge #2 and a former board member of the Police Association of New Orleans. He will forever be remembered for his serious “police” face yet infectious and dimpled smile, cheesy dad jokes, his ability to remember every movie quote known to man and his love for his Irish heritage. Anyone who knew Mike knew he was a diehard Chicago Cubs fan and was lucky enough to see them win the World Series in 2016 and loved the New Orleans Saints. Despite never having sons, he instilled his love for sports and good movies, specifically Star Wars, in his daughters. Special thanks to Collin Arnold, Jeff Jacob, Robert “Bob” Bachelder, Nicholas “Nick” Gernon, and many others for being such true friends to Mike and supporting him. He had an extremely distinguished career as a detective and a police officer and left a lasting impact on everyone’s life he came into contact with. He was a wonderful father, husband, son, cousin, and friend. Mike will be missed by many and loved forever.
