Mercedes Saravia de Davila, affectionately known as “Mita” and “Abuelita”, a beautiful and beloved member of her family and community, passed away at the age of 87 on Tuesday, April 18, 2023. Mercedes was born in Leon, Nicaragua in 1935 and moved to New Orleans with her family in 1969, where she and her family settled.Mercedes was the beloved wife of the late Oscar Davila Reyes, and the beloved mother of the late Napoleon Davila. She is survived by her children, Oscar Antonio Davila and his wife Jeri Lynn Stansbury Davila, and Patricia Davila Hemard and her husband Eugene "Gene" Hemard. Mercedes was a cherished grandmother to her grandchildren, Paige Davila Entwisle and her husband Jonathan Entwisle, Grace Isabel Davila, Brandon Hemard, Dustin Hemard, and Dylan Hemard, and great-grandmother to Olivia Entwisle and Mia Entwisle. She also shared her grandmotherly love with Lauren Miller Weber, and her children, Lucien and Laila Weber. Mercedes was the daughter of the late Antonio Saravia and Soledad Oviedo, stepdaughter of the late Manuela Montenegro Saravia. She is survived by her stepsisters, Thelma Rodriguez, and Sylvia Calderon both of California, sisters-in-law Olivia D. Toth, Ligia Davila de Mena, Lillian Castrillo de Davila, and Lillian Davila de Quiroz, her cousins Carmen Davila Szalai, Marcia B. Davila, M.D., and Sandra Davila Samson, DDS. Mercedes will be remembered for her love of spending time with her family, especially annual summer beach vacations with her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed spending Saturday afternoons with her sisters-in-law and cousins, having lunch at various restaurants in and around New Orleans. Mercedes loved dancing, shopping, and cooking for others. She was known for cooking the best chancho con yuca and arroz con pollo. Mercedes had a kind and generous heart, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Funeral Mass in the chapel of Mothe Funeral Home, 7040 Lapalco Blvd. Marrero, LA on Tuesday, April 25, 2023 at 1pm. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 11am until 1pm. Friends and family are invited to attend to pay their respects and celebrate Mercedes's life. Mercedes will be dearly missed but will remain forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society.
