Lucille Melancon Dolbear passed away on January 19, 2017 at the age of 86. Beloved wife of the late Bernard Staples Dolbear. Mother of Margaret A. Reppert (Todd), Michael J. Dolbear (Yoshiko), Maureen C. Dolbear, and Thomas P. Dolbear (Jana). Grandmother of Lauren, Austin, and Caroline. Sister of Elizabeth Haydel, Yolande Bolline, Corrine Bouquet, Mildred Lands, Gerald Melancon, and the late Edward, Claude Jr., Raymond, Eugene, Roy, James, and Gertrude Melancon. Daughter of the late Amelie Porrier Melancon and Claude Melancon. She is survived by many loving relatives and friends.
Lucille was born in St. James Parish on January 20, 1930 and lived in Algiers, LA. She graduated as valedictorian from St. James High School in 1948 and Charity Hospital School of Nursing in New Orleans, where she earned a degree in nursing in 1950. On July 15, 1952, she married Bernard Staples Dolbear of St. Louis, MO. She worked as a Registered Nurse until 1956, when she and Bernard returned to New Orleans from Washington DC to raise a family.
Lucille and Bernard co-founded the Westbank Association for Retarded Citizens (ARC). She served as president and was an active member for over 30 years. Her advocacy on behalf of autistic children began after the birth of her daughter, Maureen, and continued for the duration of her life. Lucille’s devotion to serving others also included charity work for the American Heart and Lung Association, as well as for Special Olympics.
She was an active member of the Algiers Lions Club and was a past president of the Lioness Club. Lucille was a very active member of her church, St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church in Algiers, serving both on the Ladies Guild and as a member of St. Andrew Gregarious Elders (SAGES).
In addition to being a devoted wife and loving mother and grandmother, she touched the lives of many others during her years in Algiers and will be greatly missed.

In appreciation, the family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Taminka Roussell, Lisa Howard, Annie Montana, and Patricia Williams for their love and care of Maureen and Lucille over many years.

Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the visitation at MOTHE FUNERAL HOMES, 2100 Westbank Expy., Harvey, LA on Friday, January 27, 2017 from 6 to 9 PM, resuming at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church from 10 to 11 AM on Saturday January 28, 2017. A Funeral Mass will follow. Interment is at Westlawn Memorial Park.
