Lionel Charles Schmidt

Lionel Charles Schmidt, 68, entered into eternal life on Saturday, October 21, 2023. He was a native of New Orleans, LA and lived in Gretna for over 20 years.

Lionel was preceded in death by his parents, Lionel C. Schmidt, Sr and Dorothy B. Schmidt. He is survived by his daughter, Hayley Elizabeth Schmidt, his son, Adam Matthew Schmidt, his siblings, Mary Anne Schmidt Chan, Michael Gerard Schmidt and Mark Henry Schmidt; nieces Samantha Chan Buffington, Andrea Chan, Kelly Chan, Jennifer Schmidt Columbia, Jamie Schmidt, and great nephew and niece, Jacob and Jolie Columbia. He is also survived by former wife and lifelong friend, Kristin Valley, and his loyal canine companion, Gizmo.

Lionel was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and Shrine in Gretna, singing in the choir and cantoring at St. Anthony in Gretna. He was an active priest in the Archdiocese of New Orleans for 8 ½ years, and worked for New York Life, DePaul Hospital, Union National Insurance Company, Americare Hospice and most recently, Traditions Health Hospice.

Lionel lived for his two beautiful children, his family, friends, football, food and most importantly, his faith.

The family will receive friends Friday, October 27, 2023 from 8 am-10 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church and Shrine, 610 Sixth Street, Gretna LA 70053. A Catholic Mass will follow at 10 a.m. Inurnment will be private. Arrangements by Mothe Funeral Home.
