Julio Guichard

May 2, 1930 — October 18, 2023

New Orleans

We are saddened to inform that Julio Guichard passed away peacefully on October 18, 2023. He is best known for his extensive work for over 50 years, in radio, television, and talent promotion in New Orleans.

He was one of the pioneers of Spanish media in the area. Born in Cuba, Julio immigrated to the United States with his young family to New York. A few years later, he decided to move to New Orleans and arrived here in 1963. He is credited for spearheading KGLA Radio Mil in the early 70s and then WADU Radio Monumental in the early 90s. His weekly television show, "De Todo Un Poco," aired for 23 years, a show that he produced and hosted and retired from.

In the 1980's, he created "El Festival de la Canción" a festival that would take place every September to celebrate Hispanic Heritage and that included several Latin American artists performing all in one night to the delight of audience members. Many renowned entertainers, including Celia Cruz, Julio Iglesias, Alvaro Torres, Charytin, Luis Enrique and Chayanne, set foot on a New Orleans stage, thanks to Guichard's efforts to give the community quality entertainment while celebrating Hispanic heritage and culture. In 2017, Cervantes Foundation honored him with the Guillermo De Bango Excellence in the Arts Award for this and all his other contributions to media. in 2018 he was awarded the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award for his many years of promoting Latin American music at the festival.

He was an amazing husband to Olga Riano Guichard for 69 years and a wonderful father and grandfather. Father of Julio H. Guichard (Wendy), Rudy Guichard (Daniene), and Michael Guichard (Rindy). Grandfather of Lauren G. Hoskin (Ryan), Brandon Guichard, Gabby Guichard, and step-grandfather of Carter Petite, and Connor Simon (Anthony) and step-great-grandchild Waverly. Son of the late Magdalena Paraja Guichard and Julio A. Guichard. Brother of the late Raymond Guichard and Mirtha G. Iglesias.  Also survived by nieces and nephews.
