Julia Larkin Myers’ long and eventful life ended with her peaceful death at age 104 on October 13, 2025.
Julia, better known as “Julie,” was preceded in death by her husband Herbert Paul Myers, to whom she was married for 57 years; her sisters Veronica, Mary, and Mildred; and her brothers Cornelius and Maurice “Buddy.” She is survived by her sister Patricia Larkin, her daughters Sheila Myers and Delynne Myers, M.D., her son-in-law John Moossy, M.D., and her grandson Paul Moossy, in addition to many nieces and nephews and their children.
Julie was born on February 24, 1921, in New York City to Julia Collins, who had immigrated to the United States from Limerick, Ireland and Cornelius Larkin, who had immigrated from Cork, Ireland. Julie grew up in the Bronx Section of New York City and attended the Fordham School of Nursing. After completing that program, she enlisted in the Army Nurse Corp and was deployed to Europe during World War II. While serving as a Lieutenant in the Nurse Corp, she was present in a Belgium hospital caring for wounded soldiers when it was bombed during the Battle of the Bulge. When stationed in England, she met Herbert Myers, who was from Minnesota and a Lieutenant in the United States Army Signal Corp. She and Herbert were subsequently married in New York City on February 9, 1947.
After their marriage, Herbert’s work took him and Julie to Chicago, Illinois; Des Moines, Iowa: Omaha, Nebraska; and Columbus Ohio. During this time, Julie obtained her degree in 1961 from the College of St. Mary in Omaha, Nebraska, and raised her daughters. She was active in their school activities and served as a Troup Leader for their Brownie and Girl Scout Troops.
In 1971, Herbert’s job brought him and Julie to New Orleans where they remained until their deaths. During her years in New Orleans, Julie loved to participate in the city’s celebration of St. Patrick’s Day and developed her endearing hobby of collecting frog figurines of all types. She was engaged in numerous civic and volunteer activities. She was a member of the League of Women Voters and served as a volunteer Ombudsman with the State Ombudsman Program under the Governor’s Office for Elderly Affairs for over 40 years. As one of the initial parishioners of Holy Spirit Church in Algiers, she was involved in numerous church activities and a member of the Keepers of the Faith group.
