Joseph "Billy" Gibson

Joseph W. “Billy” Gibson, Jr. passed away peacefully at his residence, on September 21, 2026. He was 84 years. Beloved husband of the late Wilma Jean Creed Gibson. Father of Ronald F. Gibson (Darlene Rapp Gibson) and Philip J. Gibson. Step grandfather of Shane Tierny, Sr. and Brandi Tierny. Step-great-grandfather of Jade Tierny, Shane Tierny, Jr. and Jourdan Tierny. Step-great-great-grandfather of Da’Zaelyn, Xavier, Dillon, Jr., and Draylen. Brother of Paulette Royse (the late Kenneth), Paul Gibson (Cyndy), James Gibson (Susan), Thomas Gibson, and Maria Hughes. Son of the late Lucille Trosclair Gibson and Joseph W. Gibson. Also survived by other loving relatives and friends.

Billy was born and raised in Algiers and attended St. Aloysius High School. After graduation in 1959, he joined the U.S. Air Force where he was trained in communications and meteorology, also played football as a running back and was undefeated for the 4 years that he was there. Following his honorable discharge, he tried out for the developing New Orleans Saints football team. He served on the New Orleans Fire Department for 15 years before moving on to New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board where he worked for another 15 years of civil service. He was an avid (and gifted) fisherman and loved the outdoors. He was a member of Mary’s Helpers and enjoyed his time with friends at the American Legion. He will be sadly missed.

Family and friends are invited to gather at Mothe Funeral Home, 7040 Lapalco Boulevard, Marrero, LA on Monday, September 28, 2026 from 9 AM to 11 AM. A Funeral Mass will follow. Interment Westlawn Memorial Park in Gretna.
