Jose M. Araujo Sr. was born on July 20, 1922, in San Juan de Flores, Honduras, and entered into eternal rest on Friday, March 27, 2026, at the age of 103. He was a longtime resident of Gretna, Louisiana.

He was the beloved son of the late Vicente Araujo and the late Lucila Reyes, and the devoted husband of 78 years to Ines Araujo Guevara.

He was the loving father of Aracely Chacon (Jose Antonio), Jose M. Araujo Jr. (Marilyn), and Alex Araujo (Delma). He was a proud and adoring grandfather of Dawn, Marco, Melissa, Jose III, Ingrid, Ivan, Armando, Carla, Cristina, and Angelica, as well as 17 great-grandchildren, all of whom he loved dearly.

During his teenage years, Jose became a skilled shoemaker, working in his uncle’s shop in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. He later married and served as a merchant marine. In 1964, he immigrated to the United States and soon brought his wife and children to New Orleans. He went on to work as a longshoreman until his retirement.

Jose was also a talented carpenter who took great pride in building and improving his home, a passion he continued well into his eighties. In his leisure time, he enjoyed watching professional soccer and Major League Baseball, often while enjoying his favorite sweet treats.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 4, 2026, at Mothe Funeral Home, 7040 Lapalco Blvd., Marrero, LA. Visitation will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by a Catholic Mass in the chapel at 12:00 noon. Interment will follow at Westlawn Cemetery, 1225 Whitney Avenue, Gretna, Louisiana, 70056.
