John Joseph “Pete” Whelan

John Joseph “Pete” Whelan died November 21, 2023 at the age of 97. A native of Algiers, Louisiana and a resident of Bush, Louisiana for the past 35 years.

The son of the late Joseph Emile Whelan and Clara Alwell Whelan. Husband of the late Rose Ann Decareaux Whelan. Brother of Dolores Billie Wappler, the late Ramona Winsley, and the late Geraldine Samanie. Father of Darnell Wemhoner (Ron), Gale Hebert (the late Eugene), and Peggy Whelan. Stepfather of Jeannette Babin (the late Gene), and Lester Lewis, Jr. (Laura). Grandfather of Guy Babin, Amanda Lewis, Lester Lewis, III (Rachel), Kim Batiansila (Brandon) and Kayla Hebert, six great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

He proudly served in the U.S. Army and was a WWII Veteran, a member of K Company, 274th Infantry and a Bronze Star recipient. He was a gifted artist in all mediums including duck and wood carving and enjoyed going to the bayou to carve ducks with his wood carving buddies.

Special thanks to his wonderful neighbors Barbara and Jimmy Adelfio, Heart of Hospice, Home Instead and the Suites of Algiers. A memorial service will be held at a date to be determined.

Family will receive friends on Saturday, December 9th at 9:30 pm at Mothe Funeral Home, 1300 Vallette St in Algiers. A memorial service will start at 11:00 am. Arrangements by Mothe.
