John Clarence Heurtin Jr.

January 31, 1939 — January 30, 2023

John Clarence Heurtin, Jr., aged 83, passed away at his home in the early hours of Monday, January 30, 2023, just shy of his 84th birthday. John was born on January 31, 1939 in New Orleans, LA to John C. Heurtin and Grace Louise Tillotson Heurtin. He grew up in Old Gretna on Lavoisier Street near St. Joseph Catholic Church and attended St. Joseph School as a child. John graduated from Jesuit High School in New Orleans and the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. He became a teacher and spent the majority of his career at his beloved Fisher Middle-High School, teaching three generations of students American History, Civics, and Free Enterprise. John retired with 51 years of service in Jefferson Parish…and he loved every minute of it. There was no one more dedicated and loved his job more than John.
John was a Veteran of the United States Coast Guard Reserve where he proudly served from 1962 – 1969. He was stationed aboard the Cutter Unimak on iceberg patrol in the North Atlantic, among other duties.
He married his wife Marilyn on July 17, 1970 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Barataria, LA and moved to nearby Lafitte, LA where they resided for over 40 years and raised two sons, John III and Michael. John was a loving and devoted father, husband, and an avid outdoorsman. He loved hunting and fishing with his friends and family. He was known for his extensive vocabulary, quick wit, and love of sweets. He spent his later years with Marilyn enjoying early morning walks, attending local theater, and traveling to visit his grandchildren in Missouri and North Carolina.
Heartfelt appreciation is extended by the family to Heart of Hospice for their compassionate care, especially to John’s wonderful nurse Melinda Harlow, our angel in so many ways. Also, special thanks to Susie Adams, another very special angel, who helped care for John in his final days. We were truly blessed by the care given by these two exceptional ladies.
John is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Marilyn Lombas Heurtin. Father of John Heurtin, III (Kristin) and Michael Heurtin (Diane). Grandfather of Jackson, Lorelai, Carson, Logan, and Sean. Son of the late John C. Heurtin and Grace Tillotson Heurtin. Brother of James Heurtin, DDS (Ardys) and Ray Heurtin (Marie). Also survived by a host of nieces and nephews.
