Joan Schmitt, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 12, 2026, at the age of 81.
Born on May 8, 1945, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Joan spent most of her life in Gretna, Louisiana.
Joan was preceded in death by her loving husband, Lester Schmitt; her parents, Frances Signorelli and Frank Saltalamachia; and her siblings, Joseph Saltalamachia, Jeanette Herbez, and Nick Saltalamachia.
She leaves behind a loving family who will cherish her memory forever: her daughters, Leslie Schmitt, Frannie Schmitt, and Tammy Schmitt; her granddaughters Kayla-Lynn Wattigny (Douglas) and Lauren Blanchard (Michael) her treasured great-grandchildren, Kingsley Blanchard , Aurora Wible, and Madeline Wattigny; and her beloved furbabies, Sparky, Gucci, and Piper, who brought her endless joy and companionship.
Also survived nieces, nephew, an in-laws.
She dedicated many years to Jefferson Parish Schools as a Paraprofessional, touching the lives of countless students with her patience, kindness, and commitment to education before her retirement.
Joan will be remembered for her generous heart, unwavering devotion to her family, and the warmth she shared with everyone she met. Her strength, wisdom, humor, and unconditional love created lasting memories that will forever be treasured by those fortunate enough to know her.
Though our hearts are heavy with sorrow, we find comfort in knowing that Joan's legacy lives on through her family.
