A lifelong New Orleanian, devoted family man, and joyful spirit who never met a stranger — James “Jimmy” William Ponseti, Sr. lived every day with laughter, loyalty, and love. James “Jimmy” William Ponseti, Sr. passed away peacefully at home on Saturday morning, November 8, 2025. He was 91 years old. Born on October 11, 1934, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Jimmy was the son of the late Annie Margaret Bourquin and Theodore John Ponseti, Sr. He was the middle child in a spirited family of thirteen, raised in the heart of New Orleans’ Marigny neighborhood, where faith, family, and laughter filled every room. He attended Holy Trinity Elementary and proudly graduated from St. Aloysius High School in 1952. Jimmy was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, Gayle Gibson Ponseti; his parents; his siblings Ted Jr., Pete, Ann (“Sis”) King, Jerry, Joe, and Richie; and his cherished son-in-law Timothy Knight. He is survived by his siblings Don, Pat, Betty Pinac, Tommy, and Cathy Laterrade; his children James Jr. (Trish), Rik, Mik, Gaylyn (Todd), Damian (the late Timothy), and Erin (Tom); his grandchildren Edward (Chloe), Melissa (Todd), Jake (Kate), Camille, Ellyn (Matthew), Julia (Nick), Tom Jr., and Jack; and his great-grandchildren Daniel, Sadie, and Charlotte, who all lovingly called him “Papa.” After serving several years in the U.S. Naval Reserve, including two years of active duty, Jimmy returned home to begin a life with Gayle — the love of his life. Together, they raised their family in Algiers, where they were devoted parishioners of St. Julian Eymard Church and later members of St. Martha Catholic Church in Harvey. He worked hard through the years — as a longshoreman, clerk, shoe store manager, auto body shop manager, and warehouse supervisor — but no matter the job, his real work was making friends and living life to the fullest. For over 50 years, Jimmy was a proud and dedicated member, officer, and co-Captain of Pete Fountain’s Half-Fast Walking Club. Mardi Gras Day was his high holy day — and no one did it better. Dressed in full Carnival regalia, he could always be found in front of Commander’s Palace, ready to lead the Half-Fast through the streets of New Orleans, smiling ear to ear and waving to the crowds. To him, Mardi Gras wasn’t just a day — it was a way of life: friendship, music, laughter, and a deep love for the city that raised him. When the parades were over, Jimmy found peace and camaraderie on the golf course. Whether the scorecard looked good or not, every round was a success if it ended with laughter and good company. His quick wit, easy smile, and knack for storytelling made him the favorite playing partner of many. Above all, Jimmy’s greatest pride was his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. His home was filled with laughter, music, and the delicious smells of shared meals — the kind of home where everyone felt welcome. In his later years, he cherished his visits to the Blue Angel Lounge in Belle Chasse and dinners at favorite local spots like Salvo’s, Irene’s Cuisine, and Crescent City Steakhouse. No matter where he went, he was greeted with a smile, a handshake, and often, a story to tell. Jimmy lived life with humor, generosity, and an unshakable New Orleans spirit. He leaves behind a legacy of love, loyalty, and laughter — a reminder to us all: laissez les bons temps rouler. And if you happen to hear a brass band playing or a golf ball rolling just right, you can bet Jimmy’s somewhere smiling — because he wouldn’t want it any other way.
