James Dudley "JD" Chancey

June 13, 1943 — September 3, 2023

James Dudley “JD” Chancey was a devoted husband, daddy, grandaddy, brother, and friend. He left this world at his home in Avondale, LA surrounded by love and his family on September 3, at the age of 80. He was born to Elijah O’Quinn Chancey and Lilly Velma Shipes on June 13, 1943. He was the oldest of five, and survived by his loving sister, Rosaline Adreane Cuenca.

He spent his time growing up on the family tobacco farm, helping with his siblings, and later traveling to Nashville, TN where he met the love of his life, Helen Marie Kestner. Together, they had 4 children, Terri Dawn Chancey, James Bryan Chancey, Robart Edward “Red” Baron Chancey and Tammy Marie Chancey.

JD was a courageous man who taught many the importance of discipline and hard work. He was infatuated with learning new things throughout his life and spent many hours completely absorbed in books. He worked as a pipe welder throughout his younger years, and later became a mechanic, most notable as a motorcycle mechanic. A profession he now leaves in the hands of his two sons. He was good at just about anything and everything. Astonishingly, he maintained his head strong independence, even in his final moments. He was a man of few words. If you knew him, you knew he would have simply written, “I just came to show face, so now I’m leaving.” JD leaves behind his grandchildren, Lacie Elizabeth Landry, Sophia Chantell Beck, Paynn Devlyn Cangelosi, Isabella Chancey Oseguera, Mallory Elizabeth Brown, and Bryan Joseph Chancey, and his great grandchildren, Dominic Mason Robinson, Brianna Lilly Kersey, Xander Riddick Robinson, Cage Miguel Robinson, Cody Elijah Cooper, Kambrie Snow Beck, Logan Beck, Lilah Beck, Gannon Rhett Landry, Gunner Red Landry, and Millie Harper Oseguera. He is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Elijah O’Quinn Chancey and Lilly Velma Shipes, his brothers, William Fletcher Chancey and Quinn Cook “Cookie” Chancey, and sisters, Patricia Carol Sullivan and Martha Ann Shipes, and his grandaughter, Tearria LayShya Kersey and great grandaughter, Everleigh James Landry. Grandaddy, there are no stars that will ever shine as bright as you. You are everything in our eyes.

Daddy, we will miss your laugh, your smile and most of all, your love. You will forever be in our hearts.
