George Giannakis passed away on Thursday, February 26, 2026, at his home surrounded by the love of his family.
George was born on Oinousses Island, Greece on September 2, 1966. He lived in Cleveland, Ohio when he first immigrated to America, and then moved to New Orleans where he made it his home.
He was the son to the late John Giannakis (Voukialis) and survived by his mother, Despina Giannakis Kontoudis (Spetsiotis-Kambourena), his sister Maria Giannakis Hardin, his nieces Shannon and Spencer Johnson, Stephanie Hardin and her children, his aunts and uncles Kostas Mixakis and Irene Spetsiotis Mixakis & family, Stefanos and Xariklia Spetsiotis & family and his cousins Stelios Mixakis, David and Soultana Mixakis Bellard & family, Captain Costas and Despina Spetsiotis Lignos, Nicole Williams & family, Nick Spetsiotis, Pagona Spetsiotis Kubert & family.
He is preceded in death by his grandparents Pantelis Spetsiotis and Pagona Dtaoutis Spetsiotis, his brother-in-law Greg Hardin, his uncles and aunts Panagiotis Spetsiotis, Dimitrios P. & Koula Spetsiotis and Dimitrios N. (Tschardaris) and loanna Spetsiotis, and his cousins Pagonitsa Spetsiotis, Michael Spetsiotis Conson and George Stefano Spetsiotis.
George was orphaned young by the loss of his father, his pain was heavy. He cared for all his family but especially treasured his mother, sister, nieces and nephews. His nieces and nephews were the light of his life. He loved them. George's loss will be felt by all, but especially them.
A mechanic by profession he work in construction and was a jack of all trades. He had magical hands and could repair and build anything. An avid fisherman and lifelong Saints and sports fan.
George was the man with the kindest heart, loving soul, and brightest smile. He will be dearly missed. May his memory be eternal with loving prayers for his family and friends.
Services will be held at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 1200 Allen Toussaint Blvd, on Thursday, March 5th, 2026, visitation beginning at 10:00 am until the service time at 11:00. Interment to follow services at St. Louis Cemetery #3, 3421 Esplanade Ave, New Orleans, LA. The Makaria Holy Meal to follow services at the church reception hall.
