Franie Glenda Bush Hurlston entered into eternal rest on May 31, 2026.
Glenda, as she was known, was born and raised on the small Caribbean island of Guanaja in the Bay Islands of Honduras. She was the daughter of Elmo Bush and Ellonoise “Ello” Woods, both deceased. She is survived by two sisters Ardis Bush Haylock, Mussette Salazar Woods, and two brothers Merril Woods, and Handell Woods. Her eldest sister, Sherral Powery Haylock, was laid to rest in February this year, 2026. Glenda grew up and spent her childhood years on the idyllic Caribbean island of Guanaja until she married Colin Hurlston in August, 1976 and moved to Port Isabel, Texas before eventually settling in Marrero, Louisiana in 1980 where she raised her two sons Colin Hurlston Jr. and Clyde Rodney Hurlston, both of whom she cherished dearly until her last breath.
She was blessed to have settled in a small, tight-knit community in the back of Ames where she enjoyed the company of neighbors, relatives, and life-long friends new and old.
Glenda was fiercely loyal to her family and friends. She spoke often and fondly of her childhood on the island, her lasting friendships, and of close and distant relatives. It was not unusual to hear her state that “blood is thicker than water” when defending her generosity toward a relative; and with the same loyalty and devotion she could be heard saying that ‘our friends are the family we choose’. That big-hearted generosity was the motivation behind opening her home to many of us who were seeking a new opportunity or a new start in life. Glenda was a great support and sometimes a surrogate mother to many people throughout the years. She shared her home with several who were far from their own homes and families as she supported their efforts to further their education, seek new employment, or simply make a fresh start. She was someone you wanted in your corner, and she was always willing to cheer you on with an open heart and open arms.
Devoted mother, beloved sister, cherished friend, welcoming neighbor, cousin, aunt, Titi… Those are just some of the great titles Glenda acquired throughout her life. And she will be remembered for each of those roles she played in all our lives.
