Emmett (known by most as Buddy) Dee Smelser, 91, of Belle Chasse, LA, passed away peacefully on September 5, 2025, at Ochsner Medical Center West Bank. Born in Floresville, Texas, on January, 24, 1934, the son of the late William Floyd Smelser and Lela Lola (Popham) Smelser.

He spent a short time roofing houses before joining the United States Marine Corp on May 12, 1953 where he proudly served his country in Korea as a PFC and ending his four years military service with an honorable discharge as a Corporal Radio Operator on May 11, 1957.

He then entered a new chapter in his career as a welder for Avondale Shipyards helping to build US Coast Guard High Endurance cutters among other ships and continued his welding career at McDermott shipyards. Buddy loved gardening, camping and long hikes in our National Parks. He volunteered during Hurricane Katrina at his church helping to rebuild those that lost much during the disaster. As a veteran he was active at the Belle Chasse American Legion Post 629, always willing to help fellow veterans when necessary.

Buddy was first married to Avis Mae Smelser who passed on February 2, 2006. His son Terry Smelser passed away March 2, 2020. Buddy remarried to his current wife Barbara Jean Huckleby Smelser. He is survived by his brother, David Smelser, daughter, Laverne Pulse with husband, James; and daughter-in-law, Cindy, wife of Terry, and his stepchildren Anthony Steve Huckelby and wife, Loretta, along with their family; and Tammy Renee Owens with husband, Stewart. He has two living grandchildren, Danna Marie Bossier and Lei Ann Stansbury. He also has several living grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He will be remembered for his service as a United States Marine, his kindness toward others and love for his family and friends.

Relatives and Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service at Belle Chasse Church of Christ, 105 Kimble St., Belle Chasse, LA 70037 Sep 20, 2025.  The gathering will began at 10 am, service will began at 11 am and fellowship lunch will follow at 12 noon.
