Donald Ervin Ernest, passed away peacefully on October 29, 2026, at the age of 91. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on October 5, 1935, Donald was a longtime resident of Harvey and Gretna, where he made his home for the past 62 years. Donald was a fun-loving man whose greatest joys in life were his family, his friends, and the many memories he made along the way. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who cherished his family deeply. To those who knew and loved him, he will always be remembered as Pepe or Pep, a name filled with affection, love, and countless treasured memories. A proud graduate of Alcee Fortier High School, Donald continued his education at Louisiana State University before serving his country in the United States Marine Corps. Sports were always an important part of his life. He especially enjoyed golf, tennis, and basketball, playing basketball throughout high school, at LSU, and during his time in the Marine Corps. His love of sports extended beyond playing, as he generously shared that passion with young people in his community. For more than fifteen years, he coached basketball, track, and softball at Harvey Playground, touching the lives of many young athletes along the way. Donald began his professional career in sales with Campbell Soup Company and later continued in the food industry with Baumer Foods, where he proudly represented and sold Crystal Hot Sauce from the early 1980s until his retirement. He took pride in his work and in the relationships he built throughout his career. One of Donald's favorite pastimes was telling stories, especially the story of how he and Lynda met. He loved reminiscing, sharing a laugh, and keeping memories alive through his stories. Those who heard them will surely remember his familiar tales and the special way he brought them to life. Donald leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish his memory: his beloved wife, Lynda Louise Mehrtens Ernest; his daughter, Donna Lynn Blanchard; his “son,” Philip Blanchard; granddaughters, Brandi Lyn Bozzelle (Robbie) and Alyssa Barrios (Blake); and four great-grandchildren, Cole and Cate Barrios and Arlyn and Maddox Bozzelle. He is also survived by his nephew, Wayne Herbert. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Odile Ernest, and his sister, Janis Herbert. While his family and friends will deeply miss his stories, his humor, and his loving presence, the memories he created will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. His legacy is found not only in the family he loved so dearly, but also in the many lives he touched throughout his years. He was loved beyond words and will be missed beyond measure. Forever our Pepe. Visitation will be from 9:00am - 10:00 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 610 Sixth St. Gretna, Louisiana on Saturday, November 7, 2026 with a funeral mass at 10am. In lieu of flowers please make donations in Don's name to the Alzheimer's Association or St. Jude Children's Hospital.
