Captain Maurice J. Shine, Sr. USN Retired, passed into Eternal Happiness on Thursday, July 13, 2017 at the age of 87. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 55 years, Sandra Glancey Shine; parents, Thomas F. Shine and Mary Wilmot Shine; brothers, Colonel Francis M. Shine, USAF Retired, Thomas E. Shine and Edward D. Shine; brother-in-laws Daniel Tarwater, Sr., Carl Folsom, Sr. and Ronald L. Glancey, Sr. Dearly loved father of Lisa Shine Johnsen (Eric), Dirreen Shine Arnold (Mark), Kerry Elizabeth Shine and Maurice J. Shine Jr. Devoted grandfather of Laura Johnsen Myers (Dave), Eric Henry Johnsen, Jr. (Jennie), Adam Joseph Johnsen (Maria), Mary-Kathryn Johnsen McKnight (Keith), Valerie Arnold Benjamin (Zac), Brigid Mary, Erin Marie and Vincent Anthony Arnold and 9 great grandchildren. He is loving brother of Rev. John V. Shine, C.M., Mary Margaret Shine Tarwater, Judith Shine Folsom and Catherine Shine Wall (Brent) and brother-in-law to Judge James E. Glancey, Jr. (Betty) and Sylvia Glancey. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other family and friends. Maurice was born on July 13, 1930 in Kansas City, Missouri to Irish immigrant parents. As a young officer in the U.S. Navy, Maurice traveled to New Orleans where he met the love of his life Sandra. Maurice’s Navy career of 27 years brought them to many places and gave them many fond adventures. He served his nation in the Vietnam War, was the Captain of a U.S. Navy destroyer, the Fred T. Berry. His last tour of duty was in Honolulu, Hawaii as the Comptroller of the Pacific Fleet (CINCPACFLT) before retiring to New Orleans. Following his military retirement, Maurice served the City of New Orleans in the Municipal Night Court. He was a member of the Algiers Irish Association, New Orleans Chapter of Freedoms Foundation of Valley Forge, Fleet Reserve Association, American Legion and Knights of Columbus. He was deeply devoted to his Roman Catholic faith and his family. Unselfishly, he always made sure that others were taken care of before himself. He will always be cherished by all who knew him as a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and loyal friend and for his love of his family and friends and his enjoyment of them. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Visitation on Saturday, July 22, 2017 beginning at 11:00 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at 1:30 PM at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 701 Burmaster Street (Corner Franklin Street), Gretna, LA. Internment immediately following in Westlawn Memorial Park, Gretna, LA. In lieu of flowers donations are welcomed to Sisters of the Living Word ( http://slw.org/ ).
