Bessie Bourgeois Beroular, devoted wife and mother, passed away peacefully on the morning of July 4, 2025 in Kenner, LA. She was 97 years old. Bessie was born on April 13, 1928 in Cut Off, LA to Malee Adams and Theophile Bourgeois, Sr. She was one of eleven children. At a young age, she moved to Algiers and lived with family members. She worked at Elmer's Candy Factory in New Orleans where she met and married the love of her life, John Beroular, Sr. in 1945. In 1952 they moved to Marrero where they resided until her husbands passing in 2014.
Bessie loved her family and her church. She served for years in The Ladies Alter Society at Visitation of Our Lady Church in Marrero. She would wash and iron the church linens weekly for many years and help at the rectory. During the annual Visitation Parish church fair, she could be found in the kitchen with her brothers and other family members preparing meals. She was a wonderful cook who would pass on the family recipes to others. She loved visiting The Smokey Mountains to enjoy the magnificent scenery. In later years she enjoyed trips to the casinos.
She is survived by four children, John, Jr. (Valerie), Robert, (Shirley) Susan Henry (Bob), and Ted Beroular. Also grandchildren Michelle Smyth (Michael), Elizabeth Lively (Frank), and Robert Henry IV (Michelle), step grandchildren Debby Comegys (Tim), Ed Kline, and Rev. David Kline (Alice), great grandchildren Erik and Hunter Lively; Brysen, Oliver, Quinn and Evelyn Henry;
Jayne and Jesse Smyth; Tiffany, Kristina, Andrew, and Gabriel Comegys. Also by sister-in laws Helen Bourgeois and Margaret Bourgeois and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces. Proceeded in death by her 10 siblings, Sidney, Inez, Annie, Louis, Beulah, Bernice, Irvin, Eddie, Camille, and Theophile, Jr.
Relatives and family friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at Visitation of Our Lady Church, 3500 Ames BIvd, Marrero, LA on Tuesday, July 15, 2025 at 12PM. Interment will follow at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, 1225 Whitney Ave., Gretna, LA. Parlors will be open from 9 AM until 11:30AM at Mothe Funeral Home, 7040 Lapalco Bivd, in Marrero. The family would like to thank the doctors from West Jefferson Hospital who cared for Bessie during her final years. Masses preferred.
