Berchmans Jennings "B. J." Perez, Jr., 96, of Covington, La., passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 9, 2025 at his residence with family by his side. He was born in New Orleans, La, raised in Buras and Belle Chasse, La, and was a resident of Covington, La. for the past 8 years. B. J. graduated from Belle Chasse High School and attended Southwest Louisiana Institute, now the University of Louisiana in Lafayette. He worked for the Plaquemines Parish Commission Council for 30 years, retiring as the Superintendent of Beautification and Road Maintenance. He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Belle Chasse and St. Patrick's Catholic Church in New Orleans, where he served many years as an usher. B. J. also was a member of the Lafitte Yacht Club, the Choctaw Carnival Club, and the Belle Chasse Lions Club where he served in various official roles, including President. He enjoyed gardening and was a big fan of LSU and Saints football.
B. J. was preceded in death by his parents, Berchmans Sr and Ethel Perez, his brothers Gerald Sr and Robert, his daughter-in-law Denise, and grandson Andrew.
He is survived by his wife of over 73 years, Viola Perez of Covington, La, son Berchmans "Berch" Perez III, daughter Karen Perez Murphy and son-in-law Patrick, grandsons Carl Hastings and wife Kristy, Robert Perez II and wife Monica, and his 4 great-grandchildren, Abbeygale, Payton, Parker, and Theodore, along with 8 nephews, a niece, and many cousins and friends.
The family will receive friends and family on Friday, November 14, 2025 at 9:00 AM with a Memorial Mass at 11:00 AM at Mothe Funeral Home, 1330 Vallette Street, Algiers, La, 70114. Internment will take place following the mass at the McDonogh Cemetery in Gretna, La.
