Albert Lester “Coach” Ott passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 29, 2025 at the age of 86. He was born in Algiers, Louisiana on December 8, 1938. Loving husband of the late Lorraine Huguet Ott, wife of 44 years. Also preceded in death by his parents Marie Thompson Ott Woodson and Lester Charles Ott and sister Janice Ott Murphy. Survived by children Melanie Ott Wiche (Joe) and Jimmy Ott, three grandchildren, and extended family.
A native of Algiers, Louisiana and proud resident of Gretna, Louisiana for over 81 years before spending the last years of his life at Old Jefferson Community Care Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Albert graduated from Holy Name of Mary high school in Algiers before attending Louisiana State University on a football scholarship. He was a member of the LSU 1958 Football National Championship team. After two years at LSU, he completed his college football career at Northeast Louisiana University where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. He later earned a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Nicholls State University.
He retired after teaching and coaching for 36 years. He taught, coached, and mentored students at De La Salle High School, Behrman High School, and O.P. Walker High School but spent the majority of his career at Edna Karr Jr High School in Algiers, LA where he was both a PE teacher and coached football, basketball, and tennis with great success in all. He also worked for the New Orleans Recreation Department (NORD) for 28 years for the Algiers Division, where he held many positions and retired as Division Coordinator. He spent his professional career working with children in New Orleans and was selected as a “Louisiana Legend” by the Times-Picayune in 1997 and was included in Ron Brocato’s 2004 Clarion Herald list of people who made a difference in New Orleans Prep Sports.
The family expresses their deepest gratitude to the outstanding care provided by Old Jefferson Community Care Center, Notre Dame Hospice, and Home Health care personnel, especially Paige Bergeron.

Relatives, family friends, and former coworkers/students are invited to attend the Funeral Mass in the chapel at MOTHE Funeral Home, 2100 West Bank Expressway, Harvey LA on Monday, July 7 at 11 am with visitation from 9 to 11 am. Interment will follow at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, 1225 Whitney Avenue, Gretna LA 70056.
