Verlin "Buck" Baker

October 26, 1941 — June 17, 2018

Verlin “Buck” Baker, Jr., beloved and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on June 17, 2018 at the age of 76. He is preceded in death by his parents, Verlin “Jack” Baker and Floris Luft Baker. He is survived by his loving wife of fifty two years, Janice Baker, son, Brian Michael Baker and wife, Tammy; two grandsons, Tyler Anthony Baker and Blake Matthew Baker; granddaughter, Brooke Catherine Baker, sisters, Jacqueline Chifici (Frank), Jan Ester Cogan (Wayne), brother George Baker (Sue), brother-in-law Louis Inguagiato and many beloved nieces and nephews. As a teenager, Buck began taking clarinet lessons, but it wasn’t long before he decided that the saxophone was the instrument for him. He formally began his musical career in 1955 with The Syncopators and a few years later the band merged with the Aristocrats and with the best of both bands, The Esquires were born. Their music spanned during the late 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s. The group was talented, charismatic and always dressed to perfection. Together they became a family to each other and to the many loyal fans for over 30 years.Buck was honored and proud to have worked with some great musicians including Frankie Ford, Dr. John, Fats Domino, Irma Thomas and Roland Stone. He served as a member and President of the New Orleans Musicians Alumni Association, a founding member and President of the Westbank Musicians Hall of Fame and an inductee into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. Buck enjoyed a successful career as an Allstate Agent and retired in July, 2005. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a Memorial Visitation on Thursday, June 21, 2018 begining at 9:00 AM followed by a Memorial Service at 11:00 AM at Mothe Funeral Home, 2100 Westbank Expressway , Harvey, La. Interment will be at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetary in Gretna at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society or the LASPCA.
