Susie Lee Wheat was born on July 11, 1928 in Aloha Louisiana, to John James (Jack) Wheat and Josephine Hano Wheat.

Her brothers and sisters were John Jacob (Jake) Wheat, Kenneth Wheat, Mollie Holstein, Jacoba (Jay) Clark, Alton Wheat, Harry Wheat, Margie Walker, Hallie Steelman, Raymond Wheat, Floyd Wheat and Carol Harrison.

Sue graduated from Independence High School and attended Northwestern State University where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in education.

Sue later moved to Lake Charles, LA where she met Richard Joseph Arnold. They married in 1954 and soon moved to the Algiers suburb of New Orleans, LA, where they began raising a family. Sue and Richard had five children: Richard Joseph Arnold Jr, Timothy Byron Arnold, Jennifer (Raye) Arnold Goodpaster, Zachary Paul Arnold, Ruth (Margaret) Arnold Nassar.

While raising five children, Sue resumed her teaching career. She taught elementary school in Algiers until she retired in August, 1997, after twenty-five years of teaching children in her neighborhood.

Sue Wheat Arnold died on January 30, 2021. She is survived by her brother Floyd Wheat, her sons Timothy and Zachary, her daughters Jennifer and Ruth, and her grandsons Zachary Arnold, Sam Nassar, Evan Arnold and Ray Nassar, many nieces and nephews, and other family members. She is also survived and remembered by numerous Algiers residents whom she taught in elementary school, friends, and community members.

A celebration of Sue’s life and a memorial service will be held when Covid-19 conditions allow comfortable and free travel.
