P. Charles Schwender

P. Charles Schwender CSP, a Certified Safety Professional Management Consultant entered eternal life on Thursday, November 30, 2017. He was 88. Mr. Schwender was born and raised in Buffalo (Williamsville), New York and living in New Orleans, LA since 1991. He graduated from the State University of New York at Buffalo, New York, served as a pilot in the United States Naval Reserve FAS Squadron 851; Trooper, New York State Police; Area Director, Region II, U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA); Safety Manager, Parsons Corporation, Pasadena, California and recently retiring as a Certified Safety Professional Consultant to the legal profession. At the inception of the Occupational Safety and Health Act, Mr. Schwender was instrumental in initially establishing the constitutionality of OSHA case law and later originator of the Area Directors informal Conference concept widely used in the federal agency today. During his career he participated in numerous Professional Development Conference presentations, speaking engagements and remained active in many professional societies and organizations constantly promoting safety professionalism. Charles was also a very enthusiastic professional buyer and seller of fine art, antiques and collectibles. Survivors include his devoted and beloved companion, Shirley Ward Romano, a sister, Betty Ann Smith of Safety Harbor, FL., a nephew, Bruce D. Smith of Safety Harbor, FL., two nieces, Mary Ann Smiezek of Adams, Massachusetts and Kim Marie Elkins of Boca Raton, FL., two cousins, James C. Schwender of Pittsford, N.Y. and Charles F. Schwender of Glen Gardner, New Jersey. He is also survived by a host of aunts, grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Funeral Service in the chapel of Mothe Funeral Home, 7040 Lapalco Blvd., Marrero, LA on Saturday, December 9, 2017 at 11am. Interment, Garden of Memories Mausoleum. Visitation will be held on Saturday morning from 9am until 11am. To offer condolences, please view and sign the online guest book at www.mothefunerals.com .
