Mildred Andrews Andres

July 15, 1923 — December 26, 2020

Sgt. Mildred Martha Andrews Andres (07-15-1923 to 12-26-2020. Mildred “Slipped the surly bonds of earth” for Heaven on the day after Christmas in the year of our Lord 2020. Mildred was a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and former WAC Army Sergeant during the WWII era. My father(1923-2016), Lt. Col. Charles Andres III, once wrote about Mildred. The following excerpt was in preparation for Jane Weaver’s (Mildred’s youngest, and now last living sibling) Historical Family Book.“Mildred Andrews was born on 15 July 1923, at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge, LA and immediately started screaming, which was later tamed into singing. Mildred was the ninth child and third living daughter of Ola Bertha Deer and Andrew Jackson Andrews. She was lucky around the house as her mother would not allow her to handle the glassware or other breakables. She loved to play tennis and participate in firearms marksmanship. There were several occasions when she showed off her shape in local beauty contests. Mildred attended Louisiana State University (LSU), but ran away and joined the Women’s Army Corp (WAC), during World War II. Beginning at about age ten Mildred started formal voice training that continued on and off over the years, with her last classes at the University of Berlin. Mildred frequently sang at various social and community events including church choirs, weddings and United Service Organizations (USO). In the service she sang on the Armed Forces Network (AFN), Europe. This was in addition to her regular duties in the personnel section of the US Army headquarters in Berlin, Germany. It was here that she rekindled a relationship from LSU with Charles Andres III, who was then a 1st lieutenant in the US Army. They were subsequently married—two times—First by the German Government, then the US Army Chaplain in Harnac House, Berlin.” This began their marriage of 69 1/2 years which ended with the death of our father in 2016. Post WWII they lived in their first home on Painters St., NOLA. Their two oldest children Charles and Cynthia were born in the Marine Hospital, State Street, NOLA. Their youngest child, Mildred (Tata) was born in the military hospital Camp McCauley in Hoersching, Austria. When Dad retired in 1968, Mom, Dad and Tata lived with Dad’s folks at Lake Hermitage before finding a home in Belle Chasse. All were members of Lake Hermitage Volunteer Fire Department; both actively supported and chaperoned various events for the 4-H Club; Mildred was an active member in the Belle Chasse Civic Association. Both were avid gardeners and shared their love and appreciation of Nature with their three children. Mildred passed on her angelic voice to daughter, Mildred (“Tata”); her “Eternal Optimism” to her eldest daughter, Cynthia; and her expert marksmanship and kindling longterm relationships to her son, the eldest, Charles. Son Charles’ child, Sky Kaufman is the father of Sophie, Mildred’s great-grandchild. Mildred’s Son-in-Law, Randal McGee and daughter, Cynthia, lovingly cared for Mildred during the last eleven years of her life, insuring Mildred’s safety and well-being throughout her final journey. Mildred’s loving memory will forever remain in our hearts. Dad always waited for Mom to get ready. We picture Dad holding Keturah’s hand waiting at the Pearly Gates when she arrived. (Keturah, Mildred’s Grand-Angel was Randy and Cynthia’s full-term infant.) Tranquil Living, a small residential home, became Mildred’s loving and last home for almost four years. It’s like no other place. It’s family. Brigette Gaudet owner and Jane M. Foret, Director are an amazing team. Their wonderful staff have each given Mildred (often singing and “dancing” in her wheelchair) so much joy Mildred is survived by many loving nieces and nephews. Mildred dearly loved her niece, Lowry B. Lacy Griffon, who always brought a bright smile to her face at the mention of her name. Many thanks go out to WJMC Doctors: Newman, Clark, Storey, Walker Jones, Borron, their associates, and staffs. Many thanks to AmeraCare, Compassus, and Mr. Mike at Total Health Solutions.
