Mervin "Merv" Anthony Turlich

August 9, 1934 — July 8, 2022

Mervin “Merv” Anthony Turlich passed away peacefully with his daughter Pam by his bedside on July 8th, 2022 at the age of 87. He was a native of Venice, LA.
Mervin proudly served in the United States Navy where he was stationed aboard the U.S.S. LST-762. His missions included the Castle-series nuclear weapons test which transported the first H-bomb to Bikini Atoll. For his service, he earned the National Defense Service Medal. He was honorably discharged as an E4RM3. Upon completion of his military service, he began his tenure as a commercial fisherman off the coast of Venice, LA. He owned and operated multiple vessels including the “Caroline,” “Rosemary,” “Mr. Flipper,” and the “Lady Jeanne." After retirement, he enjoyed spending evenings at the Venice Marina waiting for Boola and Jared (whom he mentored) to return with their catch. He enjoyed drinking a few beers and reliving his glory days. His hobbies included: gardening, tending to his citrus trees, and admiring the Plaquemines Parish wildlife (especially the alligators). He was a self-less man who loved to cook and he fed anyone who stopped by to visit.

Mervin is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Caroline “Liney” Hamann, whom he adored. Father of Jeanne Turlich, the late Lenny Cubbage (Vernon II - deceased), Dobie Edgecombe (Jeff), Pam Scarabin (Deron) and Prune Buras (Bush). Grandfather of Boola (Tabitha), Joey, Ryan (Samantha), Jeff, Jr. (Anna), Jared (Maegan), Paige, Jade (Gil), Deron Louis, Andrew, and Madi. Great-Grandfather of Loghan, Lil David, Collin, Dylan, Bently, Kynlee, Hunter, Ellie, Jaxon, Zoë, Jacques, Ryker, Scarlett, Cohen, Juliette, and Easton. Great-Great-Grandfather of Isabel. He was preceded in
death by his parents Mervin Joseph and Jeanne Youra Ragas Turlich, as well as his sisters Sweet Sisung and Mary Faye Luther.

The family would like to extend a sincere appreciation to his private caregiver, Naomi Landry, who treated him as if he were her own dad. We would also like to thank the staff at Ochsner Westbank who treated him with dignity and respect during his final days. Friends and family are invited to attend a funeral mass on Thursday, July 14, 2022 at 11AM in the chapel of Mothe Funeral Home, 2100 WESTBANK EXPRESSWAY, in Harvey, LA. Visitation will begin at 9AM.
