Mary Grace Curry

June 16, 1947 — April 6, 2020

Mary Grace Curry, PhD passed away peacefully on Monday, April 6, 2020 at the age of 72. Beloved daughter of the late Clyde L. Curry and Gladys Ehret Curry. She was the lifelong friend of John Portero. Mary is also survived by a host of loving cousins and friends. She was Valedictorian for Holy Name of Mary High School in Algiers, Class of 1965. She received her Bachelor and Master's Degree from UNO and her Doctorate from LSU in Biological Sciences. She held several positions in Jefferson Parish Government for 30 years including Environmental Impact Officer. She served as Past President of the Gretna Historical Society, and Past President of the Jefferson Historical Society of Louisiana. She was an appointed member of the Jefferson Parish Historical Commission where she served as Chairlady for many years. She was a founding member of the Friends of the German-American Cultural Center. Mary was also author of Gretna-A Sesquicentennial Salute as well as author of many Jefferson History Notebooks, and publications of the Jefferson Parish Historical Commission. She was also Past President of the German Heritage, Cultural and Genealogical Society. Mary was also a member of many lineage organizations including the Daughter’s of the American Revolution and a member of the Daughter’s of the War of 1812 and Colonial Dames of the 17th Century. She was also founding and current President of the David Crockett Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy which at one time was the largest chapter of the UDC in the State of Louisiana. Mary was responsible in getting many homes and public buildings in Old Gretna listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including St. Joseph's Church. She was a devoted Parishioner of St. Angela Merici Catholic Church in Metairie.
