1927–2022

Mary Louise Catanese, born on December 12, 1927, was a lifelong resident of McDonoghville Gretna, Louisiana, and earned her official angel wings on January 7, 2022.

After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Loyola University New Orleans in 1948, Mary Louise began her 40-year 2nd grade teaching career at Adolph Meyer School. She then taught students as a founding faculty member of Alice M. Harte School from 1956 until her retirement in 1987. Mary Louise also earned a Master’s degree in Education from Loyola in 1955, which led to her affiliation with Holy Cross College as a supervising teacher mentoring other aspiring teachers in the college’s education program.

Mary Louise was an active member at St. Anthony Church in Gretna. She was a founding member of the St. Anthony Ladies’ Club, in which she held the positions of Treasurer and Social Coordinator of Activities until the young age of 90. In 1988, she was awarded the Order of Saint Louis IX Medallion for her significant contributions and dedication to the church. Her hobbies included sewing, traveling the world, and attending Tulane and New Orleans Saints football games with her dear friend Bummie Wilson.

Beloved daughter of the late Anthony J. Catanese and Jennie Macaluso Catanese.

Sister of Lena Mae Catanese Delger (Alvin), the late Joseph Catanese (Evelyn), and the late Ephin Catanese (Reba).

Aunt of Laurie Delger Buhrer (Paul), Peter Delger (Dara), Anthony Catanese (Michele), Pamela Catanese Weinberg (George), and the late Marlene Catanese Parker (Kenneth).

Great aunt of Tanya Parker Blondiau (Michael), Joel Weinberg (Kristin), Seth Weinberg, Justin Torres (Jackie), Maci Torres (Tanner Smith), Russell Buhrer, Ryan Buhrer, and Madison Delger.

Great-great aunt of Arleigh Smith, Samantha and Hallie Blondiau, as well as Nolan, Nate, and Alexis Weinberg.

The family would like to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation to both the Gretna and Baton Rouge Heart of Hospice caregivers and the staff at Fidelis V Care for the kindness, love, and compassion extended to our beloved Aunt Mare.

Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a memorial visitation at St. Anthony Church, 924 Monroe Street in Gretna, Louisiana, on Tuesday, January 25, 2022, from 10:00 a.m. until Memorial Mass at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in McDonoghville Cemetery, 520 Hancock Street in Gretna, Louisiana.

Due to COVID 19 we ask all attendees to please have a mask on hand in the event it is required at the time of the service.
