Martin "Marty" Henry Schmidt Jr.

Martin "Marty" Henry Schmidt, Jr. passed away surrounded by his family and friends on Friday, October 6, 2017 at the age of 55. Beloved son of Sandra C. Schmidt and Martin Henry Schmidt Sr. Brother of Cleaver James Schmidt. Fiance of Terri Schmalz, his angel. Also survived by many relatives and friends. He was a 1980 graduate of Archbishop Shaw High School. He retired from the Gretna Police Department as a Lieutenant with 28 years of service and was a Gretna resident for over 50 years. He was the owner of Smitty's Cycles in Gretna and an avid Harley Davidson motorcycle enthusiast who made several road trips to Sturgis, South Dakota with his buddies and brother officers. He fought a courageous battle against Multiple myeloma cancer over the past 8 years. He was a good child who became a good man. He encouraged others who were dealing with cancer and was always positive about his illness. He was very much loved and will be missed by all. Relatives and friends of the family, also members of the Gretna Police Department are invited to attend the Funeral Mass on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at Mothe Funeral Home, 2100 Westbank Expwy., Harvey, LA at 11am. Interment, Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday evening from 6pm until 9pm and again on Wednesday morning from 9am until 11am.
