Margie Lee Thompson Sherrod

Margie Lee Thompson Sherrod, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and community leader passed away, Thursday August 11, 2022 at the age of 97 with her loving family at her side. Born in Wesson, MS on September 26, 1924 to Myles F. Thompson and Lottie Mae Brent, she grew up in Hazelhurst, MS. This basketball playing- beauty queen would later move to Jackson, MS where she met, then engineering student and would be husband, Thomas Woodside Sherrod, Sr. Tom and Marge moved to Houston, Houma, and Golden Meadow before settling in New Orleans, LA with their two boys, Thomas Woodside Sherrod, Jr and David Thompson Sherrod. Marge was a lovingly active parent and wife in the Algiers community. After the sudden passing of her husband in 1990, She became a powerful engine of action in her city. Her community work revolved around organizations such as: New Orleans Public Library Board (16 yrs), Friends of the Algiers Courthouse Board, Algiers Economic Development Foundation, Welcome Neighbors Association, and President of the Aurora West Civic Association. She was an advocate for the NOPD, supporting her Fourth District precinct with many volunteer activities to the point of being named an honorary member. She was a poll precinct commissioner for her community for over 30 years, not only active in facilitating the voting process but also volunteering for various campaigns. Marge was selected “Community Leader of the Year” in 2002 by AEDF and her portrait was hung on the “Wall of Fame” of the historic Algiers Courthouse in 2012. “You don’t get anything out of a community unless you put something into it” was the lesson she learned from her mother, which in so many ways, became her life’s calling. Marge was one of seven children: Doris Loflin, Lois Collins, Laura Rogers, James Thompson, Willie Joe Thompson, and Billie Thompson.
She is survived by her son: David Sherrod, Grandsons: Alexander Thomas Sherrod and wife Mignon Charvet, Austin William Sherrod and wife Linh Sherrod, and Great Grandson: Emmett Loc Alexander Sherrod.
A Memorial Service is scheduled in New Orleans, LA at Woodland Presbyterian Church, 5824 Berkley Drive, Algiers, LA on Friday August 26 at 2:00pm and burial service in Jackson, MS at Lakelawn Cemetery on August 27th at 2:00pm.
