Margaret "Marti" (Marguerite) Hernandez Luts

September 7, 1932 — March 12, 2021

Margaret “Marti” (Marguerite) Hernandez Luts entered eternal rest peacefully on March 12, 2021 at her home in Pearl River Louisiana. Margaret was the proud Mother of three children and three grandchildren, Chris Joseph Luts and his daughter Kaitlyn A. Luts; Donni Elizabeth Halvorson (Mikel) and her daughter Corinne E. Cloud (William); and JoAnn Margaret Ward (Darren) and her daughter Alexandra M. Ward. Margaret was predeceased by her Parents, Eusebe Augustine Hernandez and Hanora Victorine Picou Hernandez, her brothers Douglas James Hernandez, Sr. (Betty – living) and Earl Paul Hernandez, Sr. (Marlene also predeceased). Margaret is survived by her previously named children and grandchildren, her sister Ethel Marie Hernandez Winterstein (Phillip predeceased), and her brother Ronald John Hernandez (Sandra predeceased) and many nieces, great nieces, nephews, and great nephews.
Margaret was a long-time resident of Jefferson Parish (Harvey, Metairie, and Gretna, Louisiana) and, in later years, in St. Tammany Parish (Pearl River, Louisiana). Margaret attended Harvey Elementary School from 1940 to 1944 and then attended Marrero High School from 1945 to 1952 when she graduated. She earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Education from Southeastern Louisiana College in December 1956. Margaret began her Distinguished Career, in Education, in the Jefferson Parish Public School System at West Jefferson High School. Continuing her own education, Margaret obtained a Master of Arts Degree from Our Lady of Holy Cross College; Gestalt Therapy Certification from The Gestalt Institute of New Orleans/New York; a Certificate in Administration and Supervision – Special Education (Exceptional Children) from Nichols State University. Margaret also studied Learning Theories, Classroom Management and Right-Left Brain Learning Dominance at Loyola University; Behavioral Modification Supervision at the Adolescent Psychiatric Hospital in Algiers and participated in Experiential Workshops and Lectures at The Israeli Sandplay Therapists Association with Dr. Bert Meltzer, Ministry of Education- Israel.
During her Distinguished Career of 34 years, Margaret held various Classroom and Administrative positions in the Jefferson Parish Public School System. At West Jefferson High School, Margaret taught Remedial Math, English, Typing and General Business. Then moving to Worley Middle School, Margaret taught Special Education – Math, English and Reading. Moving on to L.W. Higgins High School High School, Margaret taught General Business, Business Math, Business English and Typing. Then at John Ehret High School, Margaret handled the following Administrative task: Coordinator - Cooperative Office Education; Counselor - Emotionally Disturbed Adolescents; Instructor - Business and Office Education; Assistant to Business Education Consultants - Grants & Proposals, Budget, Equipment & Supplies, Training Stations and Advisor FBLA. Margaret retired from the Jefferson Parish Public School System in 1990.
In addition to her full-time career, Margaret also managed to have a part-time Career during evenings, week-ends and summers. Margaret was an Instructor, Co-Therapist, Therapist, Counselor and/or Executive Secretary at the following places during her lifetime: North Mississippi Boys’ Group Home, Adolescent Psychiatric Hospital, New Choices Therapy, Gestalt Institute - New Orleans, Delta Business College, Meadows – Draughon Business College – Evening Director, Jefferson Parish Voc./Tech, Westbank Business College, Evans Building Products – Office Manager. Margaret enjoyed her retirement years at her home in Pearl River, LA.
Margaret was proud and was as passionate as anyone could be, being an Educator. Margaret considered everyone she encountered as her student.
Relatives and Friends are invited to attend the visitation at Mothe Funeral Home, 7040 Lapalco Boulevard, Marrero, LA on Saturday, March 20, 2021 from 9am to 11am. Services will follow in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow immediately at St Joseph Cemetery, Thibodaux, LA. Respectful of current guidelines, all attendees must wear their own mask/face covering and practice distancing.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital ( www.stjude.org ).
