Lloyd Hymel, longtime resident of Algiers, Louisiana, passed away in the early morning hours of August 22, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Delcambre, Louisiana, to EJ and Anite Hymel, he was a devoted brother to two sisters, Peggy Vice and Juanita Nemnich. Lloyd graduated at age 20 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Southwestern Louisiana Institute, now known as University of Louisiana Lafayette, eventually becoming an early employee in oilfield services with AMF Tuboscope. During his 35-year career in management with Tuboscope, Lloyd trained 38 district, division and region managers, taught all management schools for Tuboscope, developed two patented inventions, was awarded the Key Employee Award in 1979 and 1980 for all of AMF and at retirement, was Tuboscope’s Vice President of Operations for Canada and the Eastern Region of the US. After retirement, he was a management consultant and later owned and operated a frozen yogurt franchise in Algiers for 19 years. Lloyd was very active in church affairs. He served as president of the Holy Name Society, was awarded the St. Louis Medal for outstanding service to his church and community, was president of the St Andrew the Apostle School Board, and served on the St. Andrew Finance and Administration Board. Lloyd was also very active in civic endeavors. He served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce of New Orleans, was Chairman of the West Bank Council for the Chamber and served two consecutive terms as Vice President of Area Councils. He was a member of the Harvey Canal Industrial Association and served on the Advisory Boards for the United Way, Timberlane Country Club and the Westbank Petroleum Club, serving as President in 1982. Lloyd was appointed to the Governor’s Citizen’s Advisory Committee for Transportation, which was tasked to make feasible the construction of the new Mississippi River Bridge in New Orleans, as well as other transportation improvements. He was also appointed to the Algiers Task Force, which focused on major drainage improvements for the Algiers community. Lloyd was also very active in Boy Scouts of America, receiving the Golden Tomahawk Scouting Award six consecutive years for outstanding leadership and service to the BSA, and the Silver Beaver Award, the highest honor bestowed by BSA. Before and after retirement, Lloyd was an active member of the Westbank Rotary Club, served as President and received its Civic Award in 1997. He was chosen to head the Business Advisory Council for the Holy Cross College Business and Economics Division and also served as President of the Board of Regents of Holy Cross College. Served as a member of the Advisory Board for the Little Sisters of the Poor. Lloyd was predeceased by his beloved wife of 60 years, Irene Viator Hymel, and one of his sons, Glenn Hymel. He is survived by his children Bill (Mary) of Missouri City, TX, Daphne Hogan (John-deceased) of Alvin, TX, Phillip (Maria), David (Crys) of Missouri City, TX, Greg, Jennifer, Andrew (Rachel), 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Mothe Funeral Home. Services will be held Saturday, September 1, 2018, at St. Andrew the Apostle Church in Algiers, Louisiana. Visitation begins at 9:00 AM with a Memorial Funeral mass starting at 11:00 AM. Private interment will be held at a later date in Delcambre, Louisiana.
