Joy Duchmann Nelson

Joy Duchmann Nelson passed away peacefully at the age of 91 on Saturday May 7, 2022. She was surrounded by loved ones at her daughter’s home in Abita Springs. Joy was born in New Orleans, LA on February 14, 1931. Joy was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 59 years Edward “Eddie” Nelson, Sr. Loving and devoted mother of Kitty Prieur (Keith), Janice Krause (Ed), Edward “Eddie-Boy” Nelson, Derek Nelson (Claudia), Becky Nelson, Leslie Ashburn (John), Shelly Nethery (Bruce) and Fritz Nelson (Susan). Daughter of the late Frederick Duchmann Sr. and Clelie Seawell Duchmann. Sister of the late Frederick Duchmann Jr. “Junior”. She was affectionately known as Mimie by her 16 grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, 6 step great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. Also survived by Yvonne and Julian. She was preceded in death by1 step grandchild and 1 step great grandchild. Joy was a passionate storyteller of growing up in her beloved city of New Orleans. She was a true New Orleans girl, growing up in the Lower Garden District and Irish Channel. As a teenager she attended dances at Kingsley House where she met her beloved husband. She enjoyed such traditions as shopping on Canal St., attending mass at historic churches, riding the streetcar on St. Charles Ave., going to Parasols on St. Patrick’s Day, walking through the Garden District and dining in New Orleans finest restaurants. Despite her large family her house was always open and welcoming to all of her children’s friends. Joy dedicated her life to being a loving and caring mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was an excellent cook and impeccable housekeeper. Joy will be deeply missed by her family, friends and neighbors. A special thanks to her sitters. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service in the parlor of Mothe Funeral Home, 1300 Vallette Street, Algiers, LA on Saturday, May 14, 2022, at 11am. A visitation will be held at the funeral home beginning at 9:00AM for family and friends at 10:00am. Interment will be at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Gretna, LA.
