Helen Cole

July 22, 1930 — November 14, 2022

Helen Cole entered into eternal rest on Monday, November 14, 2022 at the age of 92. Beloved wife of the late Clyde H. Cole, Jr. She was the firstborn child and only daughter of Noah J. Pierce, Sr., and Laura Marcello Pierce. Helen is survived by her children, Laurie Laguaite of Baton Rouge, LA, Joan Weber of Baton Rouge, LA, James Cole of El Paso, TX, and Thomas Cole of New York City, NY. Loving Grandmother of Sean Laguaite of Boutte, LA, Kelly Laguaite of New York, NY, Danielle Laguaite of Oklahoma City, OK, Kerry Cole of Rio Frio, Costa Rica and Bruce Cole, of Rio Frio, Costa Rica. Despite many challenges resulting from Noah’s injuries in a workplace accident, Helen’s parents prioritized her college education. She was the first in her extended family to acquire one. Helen commuted from the West Bank to uptown New Orleans by ferry, and, with the financial assistance of her maternal aunts and uncles and Laura’s earnings from selling Avon products door to door, Helen graduated with a teaching degree from Dominican College in 1950. She taught high school English, Spanish, and French in Louisiana, Texas, Connecticut, and North Carolina. Helen met her husband Clyde (a deep voiced Texan) in New Orleans, and they married on December 22, 1951. Due to Clyde’s job promotions and relocations with the Hartford Insurance Group, Helen and Clyde lived in a number of cities and towns during their 46-year marriage. Their four children were each born in a different city in Texas and Louisiana. Helen made many friends everywhere they lived, especially in Charlotte, North Carolina, where they lived for the longest period of time, 22 years. She found the ingredients to make her famous seafood gumbo even when living away from her native New Orleans. Helen was a loving mother and grandmother of four children and five grandchildren. She was active throughout her life in many Catholic Churches and was a member of the altar society at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Baton Rouge. Helen was also a faithful attendee at many grandparents’ day celebrations at St. Aloysius School. She attended a rosary prayer group sponsored by St. Aloysius for many years and was a co-founder of the rosary group at her retirement community. Helen also volunteered at the information desk at Baton Rouge General Hospital. Helen remained physically active her entire life, even competing as a swimmer at the Senior Olympics in Baton Rouge. She enjoyed playing double solitaire and Rummikub with friends and family. Helen also loved watching and feeding cardinals, her favorite bird. Family and friends are invited to attend the Memorial Visitation at MOTHE FUNERAL HOME, 2100 Westbank Expressway, Harvey, LA on Wednesday, November 23, 2022 from 11:30AM until 1:30PM.
