Helen Arlene Palmer Stutler Chastant

June 30, 1933 — January 28, 2018

Helen Arlene Palmer Stutler Chastant, departed this world to join her loved ones who went on to heaven before her peacefully on Sunday, January 28, 2018 at the age of 84. She is preceded in death by her first husband, Delbert J. Stutler; her second husband, Harold E. Chastant; her children, Steven Thomas Stutler and Susan Diane Stutler-Vargas; her parents, John Palmer and Mildred Council Palmer; her sister JoAnn Palmer Schoolcraft; and her brother, Jerald Russell Palmer. She is the beloved mother of Philip Dale Stutler (Karen), Deborah Jean Gerdes, Charles Robert Stutler, Harold E. Chastant, Janet Louise Hannah, Rose Marie Haley, Daniel Chastant, Carol Doiron and Alan Chastant. She is the devoted grandmother of, Don Louis Melerine, Joseph Dale Stutler, Brooke Stutler Cummings (Travis) and T.J. Gerdes. She is the loving great grandmother of Donovan Engel, Shelly Engel, Andrew Cummings and Ethan Cummings. She is also survived by several step grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, other family and friends. Arlene attended schools and colleges in Sikeston, Missouri, Carbondale, Illinois where she studied business and healthcare. After moving to Marrero in 1969, she began working at West Jefferson Medical Center in Marrero from which she retired when she married Harold Chastant Jr. of Terrytown in 1999. Following retirement, she continued to serve at West Jefferson Medical Center as a volunteer for more than 30 years. She wrote a column, The Talk of the Town for the Westbank Guide as a Marrero resident in the late 70’s for the Times Picayune Newspaper. She also wrote articles for the Mature Living Magazine and articles for the West Jefferson Medical Center’s Auxillary Newsletter. Arlene was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Marrero where she served a a Bible class teacher and on the Church Council. She led the Senior Citizens Group, Prime Timers for six years after Hurricane Katrina; and a widow’s group in the earlier years along with other ministries of the church. She truly loved to serve others and her Lord and Savior and helped wherever she could. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Visitation on Friday, February 2, 2018 beginning at 10:00AM followed by a Funeral Service at 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church, 4001 7th Street, Marrero, LA. Interment Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Gretna, LA. Mothe Funeral Home, 2100 Westbank Expressway, Harvey, LA. in charge of arrangements.
