Grover E. Bakies, age 93, of Gretna, Louisiana entered eternal rest on Tuesday, January 3, 2023, in the comfort of his own home. He was Born in Carey, Ohio but resided in Gretna, Louisiana for most of his life after graduating from Carey High School and entering the military. Grover, better known as Butch or Junior, was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend to many. Junior was a veteran of the Korean War. He was in the United States Air Force as a gunner on a B-26 bomber. He worked for Halliburton as a cementer and field supervisor for 35 years before retiring at the age of 57 and was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1905 and the 90th Bomb Squadron Association. He and his wife enjoyed his retirement years by vacationing, taking numerous cruises with friends, entertaining his out of town family at Mardi Gras and mostly, watching their family grow. Butch was always the life of the party and always the jokester at every event. He was a “Jack of all Trades” and could fix anything. In his later years, his passion was ice cream, sudoku puzzles, riding his lawnmower, and working around his house.
He is survived by his three children, Blaine Bakies of Gretna, Brenda Bakies of Gretna, and Bonnie Adams (Wayne) of Harvey, three grandchildren, Blainey Bakies Jr., Zachary Adams (Megan) of Gretna, and Bailey Adams (Zachary) of Harvey, one great grandchild, Tristen Bakies, one brother, James Bakies (Shirley) of Las Vegas, one sister, Anna Mae Draper of Carey, along with numerous loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 52 years, Dora Lee Bakies; four brothers, John, Raymond, Anthony, Vince, and three sisters, Helena, Delores, and Rosemary.
He will be sorely missed but celebrated with great memories.
Visitation will be held at Mothe Funeral Home, 2100 Westbank Expressway, Harvey, LA on Tuesday, January 10, 2023 from 10am to 1:30pm. A Funeral Mass will follow in the funeral home chapel. Interment Hook and Ladder Cemetery, Gretna, LA.
