Gary Paul Orgeron

Gary Paul Orgeron was born November 16, 1944, to Eldon Anthony Orgeron, Sr. and Vera Hebert Orgeron. He was received into the loving arms of Jesus Christ on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 19, 2022, surrounded by his family at home in Marrero, Louisiana. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Melanie Martin Orgeron, his son Garrett Paul Orgeron, Sr. (Krissy) and daughters Nicole Orgeron Moncada (Matthew), and Cissy Orgeron Monaco (Joe) and his loving grandchildren, Joel Anthony Monaco, Savanna Jane Orgeron, Raleigh Francis Moncada, Andrew Martin Moncada, Jude Alex Monaco, Garrett Paul Orgeron, Jr., Mary Laurel Rose Moncada, and Luke Thomas Moncada.


He is survived by his brother Eldon Anthony Orgeron, Jr., (Kathleen) and sister Cindy Orgeron Bordelon (Wiltz). He is preceded in death by his brother Terre Louis Orgeron. He was a brother-in-law to Deacon Bob Martin (Susan), Jim Martin (Charley), Ginny Sue Dufrene (Tildon “Jay”), and Maria Rose Landry. He was a first cousin to twenty-four including Howard “Tookie” Hebert, Jr. (Carmel) whom he loved as a brother.


He was a beloved uncle to John Martin, Sherry Martin Huner, Christian Martin, Jim Martin, Jeanne Martin, M.D., Jessica Dufrene LeBlanc, Jolie Dufrene Maberry, Jonathan Dufrene, Trey Landry, Sean Landry, Elizabeth Landry Mayfield, Gina Orgeron Ascher, Kelly Bordelon, Patrick Bordelon and Jennifer Bordelon Vanderbrook. He is also survived by thirty-four great nieces and nephews. He was a proud God-father to Gina Orgeron Asher and Michelle Hebert Walker.


Gary graduated West Jefferson High School, class of 1964 and was Most Valuable Player for three consecutive years in football and Team Captain as a halfback. He also received recognition as a member of the Buccaneers’ Basketball (MVP), Baseball, and Track Teams.


Gary received full football scholarships and played at Mississippi State University and Southeastern Louisiana University.


He had a passion for baseball and grew up a Yankees fan. He enjoyed reminiscing about baseball and was always the “go to” person for baseball trivia.


Gary served with honor in the United States Navy Reserve. He retired from Avondale Shipyards and the Jefferson Parish Recreation Department. He was the Supervisor at Kings Grant Playground and Zone Manager within J.P.R.D. where he served in numerous capacities serving youth athletic programs including roles as coach and referee. He was a member of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association and the New Orleans Umpire Association.


Over a forty-five year span, Gary annually attended the Men’s Yuletide silent retreat at Manresa House of Retreats in Convent, LA.


Gary was a long-time parishioner at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Marrero, LA and Saint Rosalie Catholic Church in Harvey, LA. He actively supported the Special Olympics, the Mount Carmel High School Softball Team, Hays High School Football and Tennis Teams, Archbishop Shaw High School Wrestling, Jesuit High School Rugby, Johnson High School Tennis teams and Hays Fusion Soccer Club, his grandchildren’s teams.


Visitation will be (9AM-12PM), Rosary (12PM) and Mass (1:00PM) will be held at Saint Rosalie Catholic Church (600 2nd Avenue, Harvey, LA 70058) on Thursday, June 23rd. Interment will follow at Westlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum (1225 Whitney Avenue, Gretna, LA 70056).
