Frederick Samuel Gerstner Jr.

February 20, 1947 — December 28, 2017

Frederick Samuel Gerstner Jr., passed away peacefully on December 28, 2017 and lived a wonderful and prosperous life since February 20, 1947. Freddie was born and grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana and has been a resident of the Westbank for the past 46 years. He was the only child of the late Mabel and Frederick Gerstner Sr. of New Orleans, and is survived by his cherished and beloved wife Jacqueline Mahl Gerstner, his three loving children Kevin, Anne Gerstner Early (Sean), Matthew, his two adoring grandsons Sam Early and Andrew Early, and many friends and family. He leaves behind his feline sweeties Bogo and Winnie.

Fred had a love for life and always had a positive outlook. He was loved by all for his wit and sense of humor. He was noted for many of his favorite quotes, “See you in the funny papers” and after a meal would say, “That lil’ bit was good, some poor tramp would call that a square meal.” His favorite pastime was collecting baseballs and baseball cards. He enjoyed time spent at “Zephyr” baseball games with his devoted friend, Larry Babin.

A graduate of DeLaSalle High School and Delgado Community College, Freddie also proudly served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Saratoga and the USS Kitty Hawk and retired from Union Carbide Chemical Company. He served as a Scout Leader for both Cub Scout Pack and Boy Scout Troop 394 for over 25 years, receiving numerous achievement awards. He was a member of St. Rosalie Church where he was also a proud member of the Jonathan D. Parks S.D.B Knights of Columbus Council No. 15892.

His family would like to offer special thanks to the many members and friends of St. Rosalie Parish, Dr. Jamie Nguyen, the wonderful doctors and staff of West Jefferson Medical Center Emergency Room, West Jefferson Wound Care and Davita Dialysis for their compassion and devotion to the health and well-being of our father and husband.

Family and Friends are invited to attend a memorial visitation to be held at St. Rosalie Catholic Church 601 2nd Avenue Harvey, Louisiana, on Thursday, January 4, 2018 from 9 AM until 1 PM, followed by a Funeral Mass.

It is the wishes of Freddie that you dress casual (NO SUITS). Baseball attire would make him smile, especially your favorite “Z” apparel.

In lieu of flowers, the family request Masses be offered.
