Frances Modica Sylvester

April 6, 1941 — April 26, 2022

Frances Modica Sylvester was born April 6, 1941, in New Orleans, Louisiana to George Modica and Gertrude Williams. Frances accepted Christ at an early age and joined the Caffin Avenue Church of God under the leadership of Pastor Burns; she was the second eldest of her siblings. Frances grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana and was raised by her maternal grandmother Mrs. Frances Jackson. Frances had a happy and active childhood, with dance and music lessons. She attended New Orleans Public Schools and graduated from Walter L. Cohen High School; after which, she attended Dillard University graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education. After attending college, France was employed by the New Orleans Public Schools. In June 1964, Frances was united in marriage to Melvin Robert Sylvester. Shortly thereafter, they moved to New York to begin a married life. From this union, a daughter--Lori and son-Kyle were born. Frances was a lifelong educator, having taught in the Glen Cove School District in New York as an elementary teacher. Early on, Frances flourished as an educator and dedicated 35 years of her life to teaching, before retiring in 2000. Outside of teaching, Frances loved cooking elaborate meals for her family, gardening, playing the piano and traveling with her family. In addition, Frances was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc, and she was active with various community service projects. Fran, as she was affectionately known, relocated with her family to Lithonia, Georgia and continued to enjoy spending time with family and balanced her time between friends and special interests, such as joining Lou Walker Senior Center and playing the piano at recitals events. Frances and her husband donated to various causes throughout their lives, including being devoted members of Dillard University Alumni Association. Frances will be always remembered as a loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, colleague, and friend whose greatest passion was helping others. She leaves to cherish her memory: son Kyle and her daughter Lori of Lithonia; brother, Walter Modica of Conyers, Sister Ora (Modica) Dabney, Stone Mountain; Sister Norris (Modica) Warner of Geismar, Louisiana, Sister Georgia Modica, and Sister Hellene (Modica) Piper of New Orleans, Louisiana, Aunt Pearl Taylor of Baton Rouge, Louisiana and a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives, and friends. Frances Modica Sylvester was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years Melvin Robert Sylvester, her parents; grandmother and one sibling.
