Evelyn Summers Lewis passed away at her home on Tuesday, December 26, 2017 at 11:55 AM. She was born July 19, 1925 in Brookhaven, Mississippi. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Dewey Lewis, one son, David Wayne Lewis, her parents, Elgin H. Summers and Mattie Lee Booker, a stepmother, Essie Dickerson, and two brothers, Vernon L. Summers and Billy Ray Summers.
She is survived by one sister, Norma Gene Ryles, and husband, Elmore Ryles, of Tylertown, Mississippi, one son, Richard Darryl Lewis, and wife, Dana W. Lewis, of Baton Rouge, La., two grandchildren, Angie Windham of Brandon, Miss., and David Dylan Lewis and wife, Julie Lewis of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and three great grandchildren, Dylan, Annabelle, and Isaac Lewis of Myrtle Beach, S.C., as well, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Mrs. Lewis was employed for 49 years plus at West Jefferson Medical Center having been the first employee for the new hospital. In 1959, she was the first female to serve on a parish jury. She was active in Westside Business and Professional Women’s Club both locally and state wide.
She was a member of Gretna Historical Society and volunteered at Gretna Food Bank. She was a charter member in her church, Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church in Kenner, LA.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Funeral Services in the Chapel of MOTHE FUNERAL HOMES, 2100 Westbank Expy., Harvey, LA on Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at 11 AM. Interment Westlawn Memorial Park in Gretna. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 5 PM to 9 PM, resuming on Wednesday from 8 AM to 11 AM.
