Elsie Mae Ballay Becnel

May 19, 1925 — May 6, 2022

Elsie Mae Ballay Becnel passed peacefully on Friday May 6th, 2022 at the age of 96. Beloved daughter of the late Canagan and Jeanne Chapeaux Ballay. Beloved wife of 74 years of the late William M. (Mac) Becnel. She was also predeceased by her sister-in-law Vera B. Mailhes and brother-in-law Lester Becnel.

Elsie Mae was born May 19th, 1925 in Homeplace, La. She graduated from Port Sulphur High School and in 1945 she and Mac were married. She was a fantastic cook, rarely ever using a recipe. She showed her love for others through her culinary gifts and if you were not fortunate enough to have tried her crab stew or pralines, we feel sorry for you.

Elsie Mae was very active in the community working for several years at the Plaquemines Council on Aging. She also belonged to AARP, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus, and was a devoted parishioner of St Patrick’s Catholic Church where she and Mac worked the Tuesday Night Bingos well into their eighties. Although she will be missed, all who knew her are comforted at the thought that she and Mac are now reunited in Heaven. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Port Sulphur, La. on Friday May 13th, 2022 at 11am. Visitation will be held from 9am to 11am. Fr. Gerard Stapleton will be the celebrant. Interment St. Patrick Cemetery, Port Sulphur, LA. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory to St. Patrick’s Church preferred.
